Tips for The Netherlands Visit over Dec

Hi all.

My wife, daughter and i are heading over to The Netherlands & nearby countries over the Christmas break.
Now i know this going to be a few degrees cooler than a nice Sydney summer.

What are peoples tips regarding clothing.
Was thinking merino base layers (what do people suggest without breaking the bank) but what else do people suggest for mid and outer layers, the wife has a Macpac puffer that she will probably take over but ill need to grab something.

Looking for tips and suggestions

    Layers.
Europeans are very competent at heating the inside of their buildings during winter. You will need to be able to adjust your clothing regularly.

Ok so nice and warm inside and freezing outside, having layers to take off easily inside sounds like the plan

Born and raised there, so speaking from experience.
Most houses are double brick with insulation and double glazed windows and have central heating.

It can get cold outside, but sometimes it is mild.

        • Thanks, good to know it will be nice and toasty indoors, just need to get the wife nice and warm for outdoors

As a tourist doing touristy things you basically walk outside with crap load of layers on until the point you are too cold to stay out anymore, and that point comes for everyone, at which time you duck into a cafe, bar, restaurant to heat up and then do it all again. I visited Belgium at that time of year.

        • Haha. That's too funny.

My wife is always freezing cold so it sounds like we will never be outside.
Time to look for some really good thermals

  • Dress like you are going to the snow. I think Europe is going to be turning down their thermostats this winter.

Also if it doesn't start snowing there will most likely be a bit of rain.

    • We would love to see snow there, but will pack eitherway

  • You know what they put on french fries in Holland instead of ketchup?

      hollandaise?

      • You won't get past customs with that kind of answer!!

  • Ice skates!

It's not often below freezing but the wind and horizontal drizzle can make it feel cool. Lived there. As Lord Fart Bucket said it can be mild as well. Thermals, fleece or down coat and simple wind jacket. Makes sure you grab some oliebollens from the street stalls (translates as oil balls). Delicious

    • I'm more of an appelflappen man myself.

    • OK horizontal rain means we need to pack the wind breakers - thanks for calling that you

I love trying different foods so ill definitely try oliebollens and appelflappen like LFB mentions below

Pack half the clothes and twice the money, came back from 3 months in Europe and can say you'll be able to get all the clothes you need over there, often cheaper and better quality too. Plus they can act as your souveniers!

    • I can imagine the looks I get walking out of Amsterdam airport in boardies and thongs

  • I stocked up on Uniqlo gear before heading there a few years ago. They make a range called heattech which is what I stocked up on, enjoy the European winter!

I also had a Rivers-Tex Soft Shell jacket from Rivers which was about $50 on sale and better than my current Kathmandu jacket imo - it's light but toasty, and waterproof in case of some rain

    • Thanks for the tips.
Will definitely check out rivers and uniqlo

  • Make sure you try the local ecstasy, it is top notch
