Didn’t Get a Job after Reference Check!

Hello guys, I recently apply job at IKEA and was asking a reference check a week ago. I received an rejection email yesterday which is really disappointing. What should I do, should I email my recruiter. Thanks

You got rejected, move on and find another job.

He should sort out if his reference is stabbing him in the back. Something happened recently to me where the guy went funny after he checked with management and was told not to give any references but neglected to tell me this. He just told them he didn't know who I was.

I mean, it's Ikea, maybe you failed to read the instructions?

I'm pretty sure that answer is either an Ikea Key or selling bulk Ikea Pencils on eBay (for fun and profit)

What should I do, should I email my recruiter.

    Just SMS them…

What happened to your previous jobs?

    • probably too much trolley pushing ?

Maybe he made a toast during the break and set off the stores fire alarm. Tried to get away paying the fireys

    Don't use that referee again.

Hmmm maybe your references told them you suck?

    • It was probably an honest feedback. Ikea dodged a bullet.

You must be feeling really flat at the moment.

  • So i guess did they ask for references AFTER you'd had interviews with them?or did they ask for references at the same time as the interview? If at same time or before then just standard and you not getting the job, may have nothing to do with your referee.
Can you speak with your reference to see if they got a call? Otherwise ask ikea or the recruiter for some feedback on why.

  • Ikea probably have a set of standard questions for the referee. Perhaps where you sat on getting hired/not hired was "maybe depending on reference". They asked questions and didn't get the answers they were after so moved on.

I don't think they would have said anything bad necessarily - just didn't confirm what Ikea was after in someone for the role.

If you want to know what went wrong, contact Ikea and ask them for feedback.

No one on this forum can explain the reason to you as to why you didn't get the job.

  • Did you put your ex's number as your reference?

  • What should I do, should I email my recruiter. Thanks

What do you want your recruiter to do? The job isn't yours.

Also don't email them, call them and ask for feedback.

They probably narrowed down the candidates to 5 people.

    Conducted reference checks.

Chose the best candidate/s on a combination of interview and references.

Maybe you need to check your references?

Sorry OP, I know how it feels being rejected for a job, it's the worst feeling going through all the hoops then boom… nothing.

    Few things come to mind:
    - Your reference was very honest and/or critical and they said something IKEA didn't like to hear
    - Your reference said something that clashed to what you said in the interview
    - IKEA had a few references to call from X candidates and they chose the best one from the references

    Something to follow-up
    - It's rare but ask IKEA/HR for feedback on why you didn't get the job and phrase it as constructive feedback
    - Ask your reference if they got a call, sometimes references don't even get a call and IKEA rejected you
    - Ask your reference what they said hoping they will give you an honest answer if they did jeopardize the job for you

The best thing for your mental health is that you accept the fact you didn't get the job and move on to the next. It's nice to know why but it's going to be near impossible to hear the answer unless HR tells you directly why.

The other thing I don't understand is why you need a recruiter to find a job like ikea? Is this not why seek.com.au exists?

  • call reference up from hidden number and pretend to be another company and hear what they say

Did you give your references prior warning you were using them?

Had they agreed they would give you a positive review?

Guy I worked with once, during probation, told a senior manager he had too many shots at the bar last night and needed to go home. He was an accountant and this was an accounting firm.

He then gave our number for references. Dude was seriously ballsy. My boss at the time replied with the old “I have nothing positive to say about this employee” because he feared it was a setup for a lawsuit.

      • Managers at my previous employers weren't allowed to give negative feedback for reference checks.

Smart potential employers know to note what is not said rather than what is said.

My manager at Qantas gave me a glowing reference because he wanted me out of his team. :-)

  • Government jobs do this as a matter of routine. They call everyones referees before even interviewing or considering. So it might not be anything yours said. Its so awkward if you dont get the job.

    • Not the government department I worked at, nor where my ex worked.

Step 1 cull to the selection criteria.

Step 2 shortlist of a maximum 6 interviews

  • Unfortunatly, 100 other people all went for that job, so it may not be the references.
