Good Easy to Use Video Calling for Elderly

Hi all
I'm looking for a a video calling hardware or software comfortable for elders to use because my grandmother is looking

Something similar to call genie that's available to the UK
https://smart-life-solutions.co.uk/
But prob something less expensive

If something that you can just connect the to the HDMI port on your TV and then it automatically turns on when someone rings would be perfect and then you can start talking even if the tv is just on standby.
Or a tablet similar is fine but think tv easier

Thanks, Lil

  • Google "video call set top box" and check the results.

I have setup a Nest Hub Max for my 80 something yo dad and it works great. He has the contacts of his kids bookmarked on the home screen so there are no complicated menus to get through and for the kids they have the convenience of ringing him from anywhere including from the mobile. I'm assuming there could be something similar within the Amazon Echo range as well but I didn't do any research on those as we all use Android and Nest was sorta baked in.

However if you are after hardware with a screen > 10" or TV connectivity then this may not be the solution for you.

    • This is what i used with my old man. #1 tech item in the nursing home.
Use of voice commands are added bonus. I wish they are half its retail price or I would buy few more for oldies.

    • how complicated is it to answer a call? can it automatically answer? or can you press just one button?

An elderly person potentially might not have a HDMI-CEC TV, might need to factor that into your search!

  • Maybe a facebook thing. Sites not loading for me but check https://www.meta.com/au/portal/products/portal/

Totally. There is a reason they aren't selling. Google, Amazon aren't any better but at least people are choosing the lesser evil out of the bunch.

  • Skype can be set up to auto answer :-)
You can set it to run automatically on bootup of pc using shell:startup
