I used to feed my dog Eukanuba…

I recently read in some forums how it's full of fillers and preservatives, so i switched to
    http://www.blackhawkpetcare.com.au/

Not only is it better for my dog, but before i was paying up to $120 for 15kg of Eukanuba and now i pay $80 for 20kg of BlackHawk and my dog loves it !!!

    • Thanks for letting us know. Will check it out!

Edit: looks good, and it's cheaper! What's the cheapest you have found it online?

i got it from here last month for $80…

        http://www.petspantry.com.au/category/more-dog-products/dog-…

seems they've put the price up to $87.95, but still cheap… and only $5 delivery in Melb.

It's also available at natural pet store for $85 (with $5 shipping along the east coast)- http://www.naturalpetstore.com.au. I've bought from them before and they're excellent. Really fast postage.
(And actually Paws for Life has it for $74.80 and about $6 delivery if you do the subscription option)

        • Yes - we have added this to our range recently and have a lot in stock! At less than $80 a bag, it is very good value!

Yeah, they contain animal by-products, a big no-no. Eukanuba is owned by Iams, and they were involved in the poisoning scandals back in 2003. science diet, royal canin are pretty poor too. if you can afford it, its best to purchase something which actually contains more meat instead of corn/wheat fillers. besides such mainstream brands are pretty overpriced to begin with, so you wouldnt really be paying that much if you are on one of these mainstream 'premium' dog foods. my dog eats canidae. its not perfect, as it still has grains, but they use brown rice, white rice and wholemeal grains, and they are of better quality and do not constitute more of the overall composition in dog foods. which is why its cheaper. but i feel that its the best quality i can get for value.

      • oh yes, fyi….

        http://www.pookinuk.com.au/for-dogs/shop-by-brand-a-h/canida…
$5 dollars delivery…20% off. I just got mine recently. delivered to you in less than a working day once order is confirmed dispatched. pretty impressive. and its 20kilos.

        • We also offer the full range of Candide at very competitive prices and hold a large stock to make sure delivery times are very low!

You can check them out here https://www.pawsforlife.com.au/dog-food/Canidae

Candide is great quality food and is good value for money, worth looking into if you are after good quality food delivered.

    • $120 for 15kg of dog food????? Wow.
Is the stuff woolworths sells really that much worse?

      • yes it is…

Am I the only one who buys costco's kirkland "super premium" dry dog food? $37 for an 18kg bag…. meat as the main product, no corn and minimal fillers compared to some other brands.

    http://shop.costco.com/en/In-The-Warehouse/Kirkland-Signatur…

    • hahaha actually costco's kirkland is quite reputable too. i've read about it, and its quite good. how much for delivery?

      • Costco don't deliver :) The bad thing about costco is that there are only a few stores around australia (melbourne for me), and they have a $60 annual membership fee. However I have a doberman so I go through a lot of food, so it still saves me lots of money (not including the fact I buy stuff for me there too!).

        • ah i see….very interesting. i might try it too! Thanks! Oh do check out the news too, as a particular batch of kirkland's food just got recalled due to potential salmonella poisoning. i hope your dog is well! =)

  • We get Earthborn Holistic Grain Free for our dog as she gets really bad allergies from grains. It's quite expensive so if anyone knows of anything cheaper, please let us know!

I would look at the Canidae Grain Free Range. All bags are $99.95 for 13.6kg of high quality grain free food. They have 4 good grain free products worth looking at.

You can see them here: http://www.pawsforlife.com.au/dog-food/Canidae

Feel free to ask any more questions by emailing [email protected] and we would be happy to help!

    • You could also try pet mince and "Vets All Natural"… it is designed to replicate what a dog might eat in the wild.

  • very interesting discussion. I normally by the supermarket "senior" dog foods (18 year old dog), but the Black Hawk and Canidae look worth a shot without breaking the bank.
