  • My favourite. Thanks op

Interesting. Regular peanut butter is only 85% peanuts and only 10% Australian (the oils maybe?)

Don't like peanut butter but good on them for making a 100% Aussie version

    • Mayver's and Pics both used to be 100% Aussie peanuts until the drought/flooding I think. Have switched to this one since dropping to 25% though

      • +2

Mayver's has been Argentinian peanuts for as long as I remember.

    • +1

Is there a scientific evidence that australian peanut is better than all other peanuts that are grown in the world?

      • +10

At the risk you're being deliberately obtuse, supporting Australian made products helps at every level. Keeping people in work, costs down, supply up, quality up, money in the local economy etc

        • -8

Yes. Buying peanut butter made from 100% Aussie peanuts goes a long way…let's all get patriotic about peanuts, like we do with everything else.

@baldur: Sorry I didn't realise overseas born Australians didn't classify as "Australian" enough to reap the aforementioned benefits. Who's got the 1950s mind?

            • -3

@pennypincher98: I am sure you didnt mean an afghan refugee who arrived in Australia last year.

              • +6

@baldur: Your 1950s mind required you to single out a specific race? I don't think you understand an economy. You're a part of it as soon as you arrive. You reap the benefits/consequences before you even make your first transaction.

Then there's the whole humanity side of not screwing people over, but we'll get to that once you understand the basics.

Crunchy (the only way to go) is OOS

    • +1

      Damn too slow

  • Taste wise, how does this compare to pics and mayvers?

    • +2

Gritty, a little burnt, and somehow incredibly dry despite being super oily. Would not recommend.

      • +1

I'm getting way too invested in this lol
They've got smooth, crunchy, the crunchiest and rustic. Rustic being 100% peanuts with not even salt added. In all of these, there's no oil added like in the usual version.

Do you mean the usual version? Just trying to get my head around how something with no oil added can be super oily (I'd get it being dry)

        • Maybe he means runny. It can be made vicous by putting it into fridge.

        • -2

It was the smooth version, and it was hands down the grossest peanut butter I've ever had. It was oily due to the peanuts they used, all peanuts have fat in them and when you crush them up it separates into an oil. This lot had a pool of oil just sitting on top of the peanut butter. Blech.

          • +3

@thatguyfromthatplace: You have to stir it first. It does not have emulsifiers added so it will separate over time such as when sitting on a shelf at the supermarket.

    • +2

I have bega simply nuts at #1, pics a very close 2nd, mayvers #3 but at much bigger gap

      • +1

Just curious, why is mayvers #3?

        • -2

I am also curious as I rank Mayver's 2nd with Bega being #1

          • @Kaise: In my experience of both Mayver's regular and dark roast, it takes ages to stir the oil in to blend it. That's even after warming in the microwave.

            Bega blends much faster!

        • +2

Just personal preference in taste and texture.
To me, mayvers taste a bit bland, with Bega having a nice roasted peanuts taste (not sure how else to explain it)

If you like peanuts, you have to try Kirkland Signature Super Extra Large Peanuts from Costco. Really good.

          • @TEER3X: Fair enough. Appreciate the suggestion for Kirkland pb, I haven't tried it

  • beware the expiry period was only 3 months in my last order from amazon

  • Excellent, just ran out of this, good for making satay sauce.

Worth a read before considering: https://www.abc.net.au/news/rural/2022-09-08/bega-peanut-far…

I support companies that properly support Aussie farmers.

    • I bet if we looked through your pantry/fridge/etc that there would be heaps of products that don't support aussie farmers. Not sure why so many people seem to be on there high and mighty specifically when peanut butter deals come up. I bet you are are all wearing/driving/using/watching/listening to products made and owned by overseas companys.

    • The whole campaign was it being Australian nuts, now imported? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PoIptxj_9c

      • This specific offering is 100% Australian peanuts. Their other regular product is imported.

    • I support companies that properly support Aussie farmers.

Globalisation. Take the good with the bad.

  • Just recently Choice reviewed Peanut Butter.

This Bega Simply Nuts Crunchy was the overall winner with a score of 87% and 2nd place in the taste test score of 84%.

Having been through a jar of this and compared it to Mayvers Dark Roasted Crunchy, for my taste buds, there is no comparison, Mayvers wins by a country mile, but not according to the Choice Experts, they gave it a taste test score of 56%

Here are the results, the variation in
Bega Simply Nuts Natural Peanut Butter Crunchy = 87%
    Price per 100g $1.38
    Sugars per 100g 5.3g
    Saturated fat per 100g 6.1g
    Sodium per 100g 154mg

Mayver's Dark Roasted Peanut Butter Crunchy = 64%
    Price per 100g $1.30
    Sugars per 100g 4.1g
    Saturated fat per 100g 6.8g
    Sodium per 100g 255mg

What's the point of Choice reviewing them? rollseyes

It's taste dependent. And for $3 each you can try them all yourself.

  • Smooth and Crunchy OOS

  • A pretty reasonable PB but not in my Top 3 & so a pass for me.
    1. Ridiculously Delicious PB
    2. Mayvers
    3. Pics

Worst? Macro's Pb. Absolutely rancid. I think the nuts are from China. Tastes very wrong imo.

  • These are plenty at Coles all over Australia, you can buy the whole trolley no limit like Gift card.

  • +1

Back in stock, just ordered, now i can sleep.

  • Bega simply nuts is a bit oily, bit over roasted.
Makes it bad for crumpets or snacking with stuff like celery or carrrot sticks.
Stick to muffins and toast for this one.
