Disney Plus Price Increase from December 8th 2022

I don't think this has been posted here yet (apologies if it has been discussed in the forums here).

In August, Disney announce they will be increasing most/all of the subscription plans for Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+

https://dmedmedia.disney.com/news/ad-supported-disney-plus-s…

Hulu and ESPN+ have had their price hiked recently, and up next is Disney+

Like Netflix, Disney Plus will now add another subscription tier, with ads.

Let's have a look at current Disney+ plans in the USA:

Subscription Plan Pricing (USD) Conversion (AUD) AU Pricing (AUD)
Disney Plus (Monthly) $7.99 $12.53 $11.99
Disney Plus (Annual) $79.99 $125.42 $119.99

After the price increase on December 8, 2022, the new plans and prices will come into effect in the USA:

Subscription Plan Pricing (USD) % Increase (USD) Conversion (AUD) AU Pricing (AUD) % Increase from today's prices (AUD)
Disney Plus Basic with Ads (Monthly) $7.99 N/A $12.53 N/A N/A
Disney Plus Basic with Ads (Annual) N/A N/A N/A N/A N/A
Disney Plus Premium with No Ads (Monthly) $10.99 37.55% $17.23 N/A 37.51%
Disney Plus Premium with No Ads (Annual) $109.99 37.50% $172.45 N/A 43.72%

Like myself, I'm sure many OzBargainers are currently subscribing to Disney Plus via Turkey:

Subscription Plan Lira Pricing (TRY) Conversion (AUD) AU Pricing (AUD) Savings (AUD) % Saving with today's prices
Disney Plus (Monthly) ₺34,99 $2.95 $11.99 $9.04 75.40%
Disney Plus (Annual) ₺349,90 $29.47 $119.99 $90.52 75.44%

The question is, how long will it last?

I'm assuming Australia and other countries will get a price hike too, and I guess Turkey will be inevitable to this as well.

Anyways, let's get a poll going. What will you do, knowing prices may/may not increase for Turkey/Australia

With Netflix increasing, Disney+ increasing, back to pirating then

I have an annual plan, will not renew it.

  • Me too, won’t be renewing

Though I will try via Turkish vpn

  • Disney Plus has been losing money, their direct to consumer bit (which is basically Hulu, ESPN+ and Disney+) lost $1b last quarter. So it had to happen.

At the same time as announcing the price hikes they announced they expected to have 10% lower viewers by 2024 than previously estimated. So that's probably what they expect to lose by hiking the price 30%, so it's a bit of a no brainer.

I'll wait and see in terms of what happens but we'll definitely get a substantial price hike. We get Disney Star which the US don't, which has a substantial amount of Hulu content. There's no way we'll keep getting more content for less money.

    • Well yes. From the article, they’re planning to lose money on Disney Plus until 2024

If only there was a service that included the majority of the different studios for a single reasonable monthly price? Sort of like Netflix circa 2017…. Instead we have all the different studios butchering the market.

      • The problem is it's too cheap to create your own streaming service, all the cost is in the content so everyone will set up their own service.

Hopefully a few of the current ones will die off, we'll see some consolidation then it'll just repeat all over again.

Early Netflix will never happen again. Netflix was cheap and amazing because they were buying the digital rights for peanuts and could sell it for cheap. If they controlled the market today they'd be charging $80 a month.

Disney bro how much salary increase you think we’re all getting ffs

  • Damn it. Subscription ends 19th Dec.

    • +1

Just make a new account beforehand :)
Worth losing several days for a big discount

      • +1

Is it worth having your account forget what you've already seen?

        • Well I guess it’ll soon adapt….
          Depends on the price hike

  • Was gunna jump on before price hike but have missed it

    • missed it?

Am I dreaming, I was sure it was $80 for a full year AUD
Now me thinks it was never that cheap and I was looking at US prices 😂

        • hahaha, go through the Turkey method, it's only $30-ish per year. Very easy for Apple users

        • +1

I think it was originally $89 for the first year as a promotion then went to $119 per year.
Damn, wish I knew about the Turkey method, will change to that once my current subscription ends

        • +1

          I had 2 years of paying $89.

I share with three other people, so I can't really cancel. I kinda like watching Star Wars and stuff when it comes out with HDR, instead of waiting for a rip of the episodes that doesn't screw up the HDR. Plus I use The Simpsons and King of the Hill has background music. Not to mention Futurama, which is getting a new season next year. Sometimes it's nice to do things the legal way, as a treat for yourself.

    • The Simpsons

I feel at this point I should just get a digital permanent copy of s2-12

      • +1

I would hang onto my DVD rips for the commentaries, but they promised commentaries will be coming to Disney+ eventually. And it's nice being able to switch between the widescreen versions sometimes to mix it up a bit.

honestly Disney has been 'fairly shit'

Shows and movies have mostly been shit the past few years

bar a few big marvel movies which are also starting to becoming woke shit and the Mandalorian tv show the majority of Disney products are rubbish

both Marvel and Lucas Arts have been on a downward trajectory since they were taken over by Disney

Even their 'kids' stuff suck, dont get me started on Mulan the live action movie Raya and Buzzlight year….

the subscription model is forcing them to push out more content at the expense of quality

honestly Disney has been 'fairly shit'

I hate the lack of categorisation in their UI. Hard to find a good documentary when there's no way of finding any in the menu
And a search ends up bringing more cartoons :(

do all these streaming services understand that the more subscriptions they all push down our throats the more people are going to be pirating.

    netflix
    stan
    disney
    prime

im going to be pulling the pin on this, i might as well get my media server back up and running.

these prices are too damn high.

100% agree. With a service like Spotify a subscription is a no brainer since you get almost everything included combined with convenience. These TV subscriptions on the other hand just aren't worth it. They could be cost effective if you stop and start your subscription every few months to catch-up on your favourite content but who has time and energy to do that. I can't see an end to pirating any time soon..

      • +1

the more they force feed us they will be shooting themselves in the foot for it.

netflix was great when it came out, it was stemming the pirate industry with cheap subscription with bulk tv viewing.

now with them all having a go… well its a circle we are going around in and we have come up to the start again.

  • Good on them. Make more money this way (hopefully).

  • +2

It's going to be a new golden age of piracy again just now.

  • Where is poll option to "sail the seas"?

  • +1

I'll stick with my DVDs. They just seem to get cheaper and cheaper. It's awesome.

  • Apple streaming service prices have also gone up according to an article.

"Apple TV now costs $9.99 per month (up from $7.99 per month), and a standard Apple Music plan now starts at $12.99 per month (up from $11.99 per month)."

Edit: By the way Amazon Prime (which includes Prime Video) is looking pretty good. I only subscribe a month at a time when I need it, but $6.99 a month and you can skip the ad that comes on at the beginning of the movie every time.

Looks like there's an updated article that outlines the price increase for AU Disney+:

Note: The price of a Disney+ subscription will increase to AUD $13.99/month and AUD $139.99/year on 8 December, 2022.

A$2/mth increase (from A$11.99/mth) or A$20/yr increase (from A$119.99/yr); not as big of a jump compared with the US (~16.66% increase), but still a price hike.

    • Yeah often the Australian market is quite different to the US market so it results in a not 1:1 hike.

Like Amazon Prime subscription prices got a hike in the US a few months ago, but there was no price hike at all for the Australian Prime subscription.

Things are different when it comes to certain types of products as well. From what I know certain things just sell well in Australia so the prices don't come down on sale like they do in the US. One example was Apple Airpods 2nd gen (the old design) went on sale in the US recently for $79USD. Which might have meant a similar sale in Australia for around $120 soon after, but they have been stuck at $185.

  • Hey Disney is increasing its price from $119.99 to $139.99 on 31 Dec 22 same day my renewal occurs

If I cancel my subscription on 24 Dec will they allow me to renew say on the 27 Dec at the old rates

Thoughts from you ozbargain genius’s would be appreciated

  • End of the day most people will pay. If a company can raise their prices so increased profits exceed any loss from customers leaving then why stop (GPU's anyone).

On Netflix 10 years ago we were paying $9 for Unlimited streaming with the best viewing quality, now we pay $23 for a more limited service, one they're looking at restricting again with the IP locking.

Now I'm down to just Prime and Netflix, will be ditching Netflix the moment the new "family sharing" rules come in.
