The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money. Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles. But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while a poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.

Rest in Peace Terry your stories wove magic

      • +2

How often would I be wearing these $400 boots?

        • +6

          Twice a day

        • Maximum recommended every other day :/ Get a pair of boot trees from Trimly, give them a polish every so often and they'll last you yonks.

Treat them like shit they'll get scuffed up, the leather will dry, and crack and they'll look like shit. I'd struggle to tell you how long they'll last you as everyone is different but 2 years of consistent use for a sole is pretty good and you'll re-sole the boot many times over.

    • +4

To be honest I used to go through cheap shoes for work (lots of walking) then got RMs but to resole them by RM was as much as buying a new pair of cheaper shoes. A good resole not from RM is $100+.
So the leather feels nicer over time but I wouldn't call it a saving. I would save far more wearing shitty boots.

      • You need to go to a cobbler and get them to put a toppy on the sole.
Cost about $50. Had mine done in 2015 on a brand new pair of RMs. I still haven't worn through the toppy yet!

If you are looking to buy these and don't know your size, I'd recommend going to an RM Williams store first to know your size.

There have been some reports that RM Williams stores can exchange sizes, even if you purchase from another store. I can advise first hand this is hit and miss. One store I went to had no issue with the swap, another refused to do it. So I'd save yourself the hassle and get fitted before buying.

If you really have to jump on a sale, I'd suggest a size down from what you normally wear.

    • +1

      Does The Iconic not exchange?

    • The RM online size guide is the best I've ever seen. I used it to size my feet and it was perfect.

    • +4

+1 Went into the store and they sized me as a 10.5 regular. I had concerns as they were REALLY hard to get on or off but once in they fit well. Staff explained to me that was natural and will improve over time. I was still skeptical, but I can attest it is now pretty easy to slip mine on and off.

    • I bought mine a half size shorter than what fitted me because of stock issues. It just took a few more months to wear in

      • Did you notice any tightness in your toes, and did that get any better with time?

I bought a pair that fit really well, except my toes feel a bit cramped. The next half size up feel loose, and my toes slide a little further into the boot, also feeling cramped.

  • My size has sold out already 😢

  • Erk, I got excited hoping they'd have the Dynamic flex :(

    • +2

how much better is the dynamic flex?

      • +4

It isn't, it just depends on what fits you the best

        • +1

What's the difference between Comfort craftsman and Dynamic flex?

          • +1

@jjjones: Dynamic flex boot is built around a removable insole, so great if you wear orthotics or need extra support. They have a PVC sole compared to the comfort's rubber sole. The pvc will last longer but will get pretty slippery as it wears.

            • @GoodYourself: does the comfort craftsman have a removable leather/synthetic insole?

              • @markdownhunter: No it has a poron type insole thats glued in

                • @GoodYourself: thank you for the info, im a 10.5 in the dynamic flex ill need to get arch support for these but other then that should be a good fit 😁 if not then ill try the instore swap size lets see if my local store does this

          • +4

@jjjones: Go to a store and try them.

Dynamic Flex is really weird for me. Makes it really stand up in the heel and feel awkward.
I first tried DF cause that is what was recommended in this post a few years ago - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/587332

However when I tried on Comfort they just felt so right.

You also need to go to a store to get your size.
RM Williams are known to be smaller size. You want a really snug fit cause they will loosen up with wear and mould to the shape of your foot.
I am usually a UK10 type of shoe, and in the Craftsman I am a 8.5

Apart from the DF vs Comfort comment in that post, I think everything else is spot on. (Yes he doesn't recommend DF, he just says they were best for him)

            • @xordis: Ye and just went back to the store to be double safe. The comfort craftsmen are nice and soft, but even the sales clerk told me the DF look better on me

            • @xordis:

Dynamic Flex is really weird for me

              Weird flex but OK

    • The Comfort Craftsman is described as, "This premium leather pair also showcase an airport-friendly shank that supports the arch whilst reinforcing the sleek silhouette." Which would be the dynamic flex, I believe.

I ordered them anyway, I'm not too fussed with the DF or Comfort insole.

      https://www.theiconic.com.au/comfort-craftsman-boots-509880.…

  • Weird they have got 20% off the polish but not 20% off the leather conditioner.

  • +10

My tip is but the largest size you can get regardless of how it fits. Best value for money.

    • +3

I like your thinking more boot for the money ;)

  • +26

Thinking of getting some of these so people know I went to a private school.
Gets tiring having to tell people.

  • +6

Can't wait to pair these up with my North Face jacket.

    • Which jacket

      • +1

There's more than one North Face jacket?!?

    • +1

      Lol standard uniform.

  • +1

Their sizing guide is all (profanity) up, sizing is in AU/US vs RMW/UK — when you click on sizing guide it only brings up women…. AU is usually aligned to UK, not US … very confusing, can see a lot of folks being caught out.

edit: if you click the craftsman (not comfort craftsman), it'll map the correct RMW sizing guide… problem solved

    • +3

As an owner of wayyy too many shoes, the easiest way to work out your sizing when buying shoes online is use Euro sizing because it's consistent and this way can cross shop, gender, brand, etc. A lot of the shoes I like are all international imports too so returns is very expensive unless they're a free return.

      For example I'm a:
      - UK10/US11 for sneakers (ie Euro 44/45)
      - UK9/US10 for dress shoes (Euro size 43)

When trying to work out your size get the Euro sizing and it will be a guaranteed fit (and yes, generally you size down one size with dress shoes/boots when compared to your sneaker size, it's because of the additional materials that sneakers tend to have in them).

      • +1

The website is confusing. I am usually an 11 or 11.5 US sneaker size (Nike/Adidas/Puma and so on). If I goto the sizing chart on The Iconic website it shows that to be 42 to 42.5. It doesn't add up.
If you were a size 11.5 US in sneakers, what size boot would you choose from the Iconic website in this case?

Edit* Nevermind I was looking at womens sizing lol

        • I think you figured it out but it was grab the Euro sizing from your shoe and then find that size in the chart

Mens US11.5 would roughly be a 45-46 Euro so you'd look for this size on the chart (NB my previous comments about sizing down for dress shoes and boots; also if you haven't bought RM Williams before they have a variety to widths that can impact on the shoe size as well)

  • Is the AU sizing lised on Iconic aligned to the “RMW sizing” (ie UK) or some other sizing?

  • Regarding swapping a pair bought here for one in-store, do you think they'd do it to get the ultra-wide X width? This actually has its own name, the Tambo boot, but it's extremely hard to find. I got sized up in store and am a size 8.5 in the X width, I'd be planning to buy the 8.5 H width here and try to exchange it in store. Not sure if it would fly or not.

    • I just called and thought I'd share the answer for anyone else in this situation: they only do "like for like" exchanges, and consider the Tambo to be a totally separate boot from the normal Comfort Craftsman. Most stores have very little to no stock in the Tambo :(

    • +2

No, they will only allow size swaps for the same boot style and colour. As the Tambo boot is its own style, you cannot swap from a Craftsman to a Tambo.

And not all stores/staff will allow size swaps for boots bought from another retailer.

      • Kinda sucks as I've literally never seen the Tambo on sale. Would be keen to hear if anybody knows of any retailers stocking it!

  • +4

Without fail 9.5 wide out of stock.
I swear it is the most common size and is never in stock

    • My feet smaller

    • +3

You can buy whichever size and change in RM store.

I did this during the last sale.

    • Many wides available though! Maybe half sizes less? I thought there would no longer be discounts on wides but surprisingly iconic still sells and discounts them

    • Definitely agree. Sadly it's my size too, and I recently had to wait 6+ weeks for my exchange pair to be sent out to the store I exchanged from. Big ol' backlog.

  • +1

How come Iconic still gets to sell R.M? I thought most retailers couldn't sell them online anymore, like Arlingtons?

Good deal though. Don't forget to use gift cards or cashback for extra discount.

    • +1

Thought the same thing, surprised they've even got stock of these styles, retailers have been waiting months on even core styles/colours

    • +1

I think they have a specific partnership with the Iconic, but could be wrong.

    • +2

Only the Iconic and David Jones are permitted online retailers now.

      • +1

Ah yeah that's the only places now. I am glad I can still purchase wide sizes at a discount. Even though i finished buying last time David Jones had a good deal!

        RIP Ozbargain Allington R.M deals

  • How do you guys convert RMW size to Iconic? I am an 8H, does that mean 8.5 in Iconic? I don't see any size with letter in their sizing guide.

    • The product details will tell you the width. For example https://www.theiconic.com.au/comfort-craftsman-boots-509881.… state:
      - Standard G fitting

    • You can ask in the chat, I'm an 11G and was directed to get the 11.5

      • +2

        Isn’t that a different size

        • +2

          Shit. Don't ask the chat

          • @whiskeyjack89: The Iconic offers free exchanges anyway so they'll be the ones paying for their bad advice

      • Are you saying that the sizing listed on the Iconic website actually differs from the sizing on the boot? I got fitted at an RM store and 6G was the best fit. I put an order in on the Iconic for a size 6… Should I have chosen a different size?

        • No you are right, I got bad advice

    • +1

There a listing that says wide fit so you get the size 8 for that

  • Any more stock coming in?

  • +2

Why are these popular, apart from the halo effect?

    • Quality boots that can last you a lifetime if you look after them.
Ability to resole them if you use them a lot etc.
Extremely comfortable boots that can be worn in a lot of settings. (a lot of work places, casual events etc, even just day to day)

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLXflRQWhf4

    • What xordis said and also they are very good value for a welted boot at the sale price. Some people report wearing them almost daily for a decade, so $45 a year.

Look up other welted boots and you won't find much cheaper. Thursday boots probably cost about $400 landed and they are far lower quality. Price just goes up from there.

There are people who wear them for The Look but there's plenty of people who just use them as regular footwear because that's what they are.

Also large range of fitments and they will even sell you a custom pair of different sizes if you want.

      • +1

Some people report wearing them almost daily for a decade, so $45 a year.

This. Teaching amortisation at school should be mandatory.
I only really started realising the benefits of it recently. Once you understand how it works, it will save you a lot of money.

A good example (at least for me) is an office chair.
I would go through a "cheap" $200-$250 OW chair every 2-3 years, so around $100 a year I was throwing away on chairs.
About a decade ago I took the risk on a really nice chair. In this case it was used $400, but at the time they were a $1500-$1600 chair (HM Aeron)

It has replaceable seat and back, and most other parts are obtainable if I had an issue.
So that $400 chair is now costing me $50 a year, and it's very high quality.

Even at full retail at the time. I would be sitting at $200 a year amortised, and given COVID and WFH. I can spend 8-12 hours a day in it, so my butt and back are appreciating it.

Same with shoes. Spend $500 on a good pair that will last you a life time (with $100 on maintenance every other year), or spend $100 on a pair of shoes you will probably throw out in a few years time.

It's the old saying, “A rich man buys it once, a poor man buys it twice.”

  • Dammit, been waiting ages for a sale on these and my size disappeared from my cart on the way to checkout DOH!

    • +1

      *I got dark tan ones.

Welp I guess I'm off to join the Liberal Party now.

  • Does anyone know if RM Williams take returns for unworn boots? I just bought a pair of comfort craftsman on Saturday at RRP, but the Iconic still has stock of my size at the moment

  • I have tried on various sizes in store and found that the standard width was the best fit for me, larger widths were too loose.

I was sized at an 8 and wore them for a little while, but found that my toes were a bit tight. I tried the 8.5 on in store and found that it was too loose, resulting in my foot sliding further down the boot and resulting in a similar squeeze on my toes.

So, the 8 felt like a good fit all around, except for at the toes. On the other hand, the 8.5 didn't feel like a good fit all around, and slid my toes further into the toebox.

I've read everywhere that the toebox has fibreglass and doesn't stretch, but I've also read that some people do find more space at their toes over time. Any personal experiences here? Is it possible that my feet just won't fit any RM williams?

    • I'm sort off in the same position, tried them in store today and found that the standard fit were snug, but a little tight at the widest part of the feet, whereas the wide fit led to more movement in the show during wear. I just bought both from Iconic (same size of 6.5) and will try it at home, and I will just return one back to the Iconic.

    • The toebox will move a bit, but not a great deal. If the 8 is tight, 8.5 is better. The sliding will stop once you wear them in (this isn't just after 1 week of wearing them).

I had a 10 and it was too tight around the toes, so I swapped them for a larger size, and even though they're a bit loose, they feel right and comfortable. Just my experience

  • Wow, I have 3 pairs of RM's sitting in the cupboard that I haven't worn for 10+ years. I didnt realize they were so expensive, I might have to flog them off.

    • What size are they? Asking for a friend

      • I looked at one pair and it is 10 1/2H, I would assume the other pairs would be the same. I will dig them out tomorrow and dust them off :)

        • I tried to send you a message but it wouldn't let me for some reason

    • +1

Yeah sell them. The Facebook sale group is pretty active.

      • +4

People in the facebook group are dreamers. They are asking $500+ for used stanky worn boots

        • +1

Yeah they are idiots but sellers with a modicum of sanity will sell their boots easily there.

  • -7

It's mind boggling to me that any normal person would spend this much on a pair of boots.

  • +1

my budget for shoes is $60 max - got about 3years out of my asos work shoes

  • Never any sales love for those with narrow feet.

  • Thank you Op. I bought the 7.5 AU size which converts to size 8 US. $444 after discount.

  • Thanks, bought 10

  • Mine showed up, but I'd already found out that I had the wrong size. Took them to a store (not inside a Myer) and swapped them. They offered to swap to a different colour which I'd heard wasn't possible, but I didn't want that. They sight your receipt and send you another for the same value as if you bought it from RM themselves.

  • Been two weeks and iconic have no idea when they’ll be fulfilled. Are they drop shipped from RM direct? Pretty shitty service, no comms, no goods and live chat not exactly confidence inspiring
