iPhone 12 Mini Just Shut Itself down and Won't Recharge - Help Needed

Hello everyone,

My phone which is about 2 years old just shut itself down and won't recharge. Is there any way to do a backup before I try do a manual reboot? Have tried several charging cables and none of them seem to be able to get it back on. I think I may have very little memory left and maybe that overloaded it?
I assume I can't contact support as phone is not turning on ?
Looking for suggestions as trying to avoid going instore unnecessarily. Thank you.

  • Have you tried leaving it to charge for some time before trying to boot it? Plugging it to a PC to charge for some time might also help.

    • I haven't tried it in a pc, but i did leave it for some time and nothing.

Try it with a PC. If your ipad detects a PC, if the battery has enough juice, it might start up.

        • Itunes not picking up my phone when connected to PC.

          • @sagrules: Not looking good. Battery could be totally dead or phone is kaput.

            • @trex: I got an error message to say that the "battery is not recognised" but the phone has never been faulty or required a fix before.
Can get it to turn on very briefly but thats about it.

              • @sagrules: Sounds like there's still hope for the phone. Phone could be refusing to charge the battery because it does not recognise it. Hence you can't turn it on because the battery is flat. It could be fixed with a battery replacement.

                • @trex: How much is battery replacement these days for an out of warranty phone?

                  • @sagrules: According to Apple's website, $109 to replace iphone 12 mini battery. You should get them to verify it is the battery first.

    • Thanks for the link, tried all the help info and then contacted support. Tried it out for about an hour and now have to go in store.
Does anyone know how to do a backup? I am able to get in for 1 min before it shuts down itself again.

      • hopefully icloud has backed up enough for you over the internet

        • It says no backup in last 2 weeks, 2500 photos to extact… so :(

  • Straight to an Apple store Genius bar

    • Time to dig up the receipt and if still within 2 years then book Genius bar (make sure you did not drop it in water.) If outside, do your own repair.

      • make sure you did not drop it in water

why not? That phone is water resistant!

      • Don't need the receipt, they will use the serial number

        • It's been more than two years, but support has sent an email to say most likely any charges will be covered.

Have you tried a cheap wireless charger?

  • How did the phone break after only 2 years? Seems like a battery/power issue.

Did you use a third party charger?
Did you regularly use the phone until it hit 0% battery and turned off?
Did you leave it on the charger sitting at 100% overnight regularly?

  • You should be able to assert your ACL rights for a warranty job, here. I don't know how you'll go but FWIW, I had an iPhone SE 2016 and at the 2.5yr mark I had battery issues and went in, voluntarily, to pay for a replacement battery but Apple just replaced the phone on the spot, no payment required.

    Also look up recovery options:

iPhone 8 or later, including iPhone SE (2nd generation): Press and quickly release the volume up button. Press and quickly release the volume down button. Then, press and hold the side button until you see the recovery mode screen.

    • I think SE had known issues with battery and so they were forced to replace it at the time.
Thanks for the tips. They won't charge me until i go instore and find out what the issue is. Most likely battery fault.
I got an error message to say that the "battery is not recognised" but the phone has never been faulty or required a fix before.

Grab a toothpick and check the charging port for dust/debris, try different charging cables and charging bricks, try a wireless charger

    • Did all of that, thanks for the suggestions. It's not recognising the battery, thats the error message.
