Travel Insurance with Credit Card. Is It Enough?

Do I need to buy extra travel insurance if my credit card (bank of melbourne) has it and it covers:

  • unlimited cancellation, reschedule due to sickness/etc (including covid)
  • unlimited medical expense when overseas (including covid)
  • luggage lost/delay
  • flight delay

I think that is all we need, right?

Thanks

    That looks perfect. Unlimited.

  • Often some sports are excluded particularly skiing so double check if doing these sports. Also I don't see hire car excess in your list either…

unlimited cancellation, reschedule due to sickness/etc (including covid)

Are you sure this is unlimited? Even before covid many policies had restrictions to a few thousand or so and since then I've seen very low limits for covid in particular.

    flight delay

Often this is pretty useless as the airline will help you out with free accomodation and alternative flights so there's nothing claimable. Double check it covers the cost of any big ticket items you might miss like cruises, tours and shows.

With all that said given travel insurance runs at least $10-20 per day if you have enough savings to cover minor inconveniences and just need to cover life changing costs like a $100k medical bill, credit card insurance is generally fine.

    • I dont have any plan to do any risky sport.
I am sure it is unlimited as the pds does not mention special limit for covid.

      • There’s not a special limit for covid there just the generalised clause that everything is excluded when a “pandemic” has been declared.

Does the PDS mention unlimited cover for trip disruption with no pandemic exclusion?

Covid medical has been covered for some time but covering trip disruption has had very low limits or serious extra costs involved.

        • 3.1.1 What we cover.
Additional travel & accommodation expenses due to
          your incapacity.
          a. If you cannot continue your journey because of an
injury, or sickness (including if you are positively
diagnosed as suffering a sickness recognised as
an epidemic or pandemic, such as COVID-19), or
preexisting medical condition that is covered by this
insurance, which occurs during the period of cover
available for your journey and needs immediate
treatment from a medical adviser, we will reimburse
          your reasonable additional accommodation and
          travel expenses.

          • @hentabara: Right but that doesn't cover resumption of journey. So you get covid on day 3 of your holiday, get stuck in quarantine for 10 days (which they cover), then you go home and miss 10 days of your holiday. Good insurance would provide you with a resumption of journey cover so you can get new flights to make up those 10 days you missed due to illness.

  • Depends what you want.

    Better cards have things like
    - Rental car insurance
    - Higher levels of cover. E.g. Amex Plat is $700 pp (max 1400 if you are travelling with a sup. card holder) after 4 hour delay and then even more after 24 hours.
    - Less used things like travel resumption cover

Does the medical expenses include repatriation? Including after death? Very expensive if not covered.

    • It covers funeral and return of remains

  • check excess.

  • Wha is covered with Amex card travel insurance on a ship cruise holiday?.

    • Their PDS is available online for each of their credit card insurance.
