These don't appear to be education prices. Are you accessing Apple education pricing? I can see 11" M2 2022 iPad Pro Wifi 256GB available for $1489.

I agree with this guy. They seem to have really confused the line-up at the moment.

In terms of your choice, I think for a uni student you wont go wrong with the M1 Air. I have one and love it. It's super capable, so unless you are really going to need the Pro features, save your money. I do 4k video editing and raw photo touch ups (holiday/travel editing, not professional stuff) on the M1 Air with no problems.

    • Agree 100% with this. Air is a good device and M1 is already overpowered for iOS at present.

    my 2 cents:

ipad air 5 vs ipad pro 2021:
    - both M1 models so from a performance point of view these will be exactly the same
    - face ID vs touch ID (personal preference)
    - 3 camera system, LIDAR and flash on ipad pro (if these particularly matter to you)
    - pro-motion display on the pro (worth the extra IMHO)
    - thunderbolt/USB 4 on the pro vs regular USB-C
    - marginally brighter screen on the pro (600 vs 500nits)

IMO at roughly the same price, the ipad pro is the obvious winner

then comparing the M2 vs M1 ipad pro models:
    - apple pencil hover (what? can you really not see where the tip of your pencil is going to be? how did you ever handwrite with pencils/pens?)
    - M2 chip - marginal performance improvement
    - pro-res video

to me, these weren't worth the extra cost

FWIW, I just bought a 256GB M1 ipad pro 11" today after making the same considerations as you
price beat from officeworks effectively equalises the price difference between education pricing M1 ipad air 5 and the M1 ipad pro 11" (1187.50 after 5% price beat)

Macbook M1 Air at $1297 would be my choice

    Pro M2 brah

If you don't care about the pen hover feature there's hardly a practical difference between M1 and M2 Pro.

If you can get the M1 pro at the same price as the M1 Air then there's no reason not to go Pro. It has a brighter 600nit 120hz display vs 500nit 60hz.

  • IPad Pro 11” 128gb at $779 in the refurbished store. Spend the difference on getting pissed and trying to shag chicks/dudes.

My choice would be "Neither - save $500 and buy a decent laptop".
Ultimately, it depends on what you are studying and how you intend to use it, though.
The main advantage of a tablet device (beyond the obvious portability) is the touch/stylus input. If you're doing something artsy or to do with engineering, then the touch/stylus input is required, and you'd want the iPad Pro.

If you are studying literally anything else, a laptop will be of better use to you. Larger screen (15-17"), larger keyboard, better typing speed because of the larger keyboard, more ooomph.

If you need to do a lot of writing, a laptop will serve you better than a tablet.

    • I'd generally agree with this, but I like to take handwritten notes (old-school) using the Nebo app. The laptop has its place for writing reports and stuff but handwritten note-taking on the iPad may be a consideration. That said, I am rocking a 5th gen base level iPad so M1 is overkill, let alone M2.

If only the base Air M1 had 128GB then it would be a no brainier, 64Gb is a joke…

I am in a similar position and went to look at them all at Apple today.

Stage Manager is important for me, so likely going to go the 11 Pro M2.

  • iPad Air 256 GB to iPad Pro M1 256 GB is only small price difference, compare to the specs upgrade.
