Lol just bought a brother colour laser 2 days ago after putting it off for ages.

Was tossing up between this one and the "small Office" version, the 8260, ended up getting the 8260 for $375 from umart as these ones were $300 at the time. So for $75 extra I figured the toners being twice the size and the added durability of the "office" model being worth it, considering my wife is a teacher and prints a fair bit.

    • +1

Some very good points you've made.
Generally speaking, the more you pay up front, the cheaper the running costs over the life of the printer (Total cost of ownership) and if people are going to be printing a lot of pages, that cheaper printer up front ends up costing more.

Also, worth reminding people that some printers come with starter cartridges which can give the impression that it's cheaper to buy a new printer when it runs out due to the cost of new cartridges (which contain more ink/toner).

I hope in the near future manufacturer releases a colour laser that uses bulk toner refills for cheaper running costs (much like bulk ink printers are now common for ink jets).

The HP neverstop is a good start and I hope we see a colour version.

Are you going to walk around carrying it?

    • +21

      lift with yer knees

      • +5

        with a straight back

      • +1

Make sure you do some leg days with that printer, don’t want to turn into a fully sick skid

        • 20kg aint enough for that. He needs at least 3 more to turn them legs into logs

      • +1

Might be assisted lift at this stage. Gotta get a helping hand.

    • +2

You'll need two for bench presses. So that's 41.2kg not counting the bar. I wouldn't recommend more than that until you can handle a set of 8.

    • +97

He ain't heavy, he's my brother

      • +1

This deserves a popular comment medal.

      • +1

        This is gold lol

      • "He ain't heavy, he's my Brother."

        Sorry, couldn't help it.

      • LoL

      • +1

        Best comment ever!!

    • +1

      U silly penguin 😼🤣

    • +1

Start lifting now and you should be able to buy one before summer is over with your new gains.

    • +1

yeh wtf were they thinking? I bet this shit dont even fit in my pocket

    • A lot of that weight is honestly the box and packaging. I would say even half

  • +3

Cheaper going to the library if you only have occasional colour printing needs. With these you need to buy 4 cartridges to fully replenish it, and that costs more than the price of the printer. Just get a black and white if you're trying to save money.

    • +3

So ur telling me, a box of coloured ink is more expensive than a complex and complicated electrical machine?

      • +13

It is indeed true that toner and ink is how printer manufacturers are making money

        • +3

$167.78 to replace all with generics, do a search and you should be able to find a 20% off coupon.

          • @shutuptakemymoney101: how many million pages does this print?

          • +16

@shutuptakemymoney101: Why would you pay 300% of eBay price ?

            $56 - 4x TN253 TN257 Toner for Brother
            https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/383563424711?
            ncludes 4 Toner Cartridges
            1x Black 2500 pages TN-253BK
            1x Cyan 2300 pages TN-257C
            1x Magenta 2300 pages TN-257M
            1x Yellow 2300 pages TN-257Y

            • @utsc: Awesome find, assuming they work without issue that certainly confirms that replacement toner for this model won't cost the earth.

            • @utsc: Provided that they have free returns. Some of these third party toners are absolutely rubbish especially the ones that comes with the drum. If you found a good toner company then stick to them. The cheapest one is usually rubbish. I always go for generic toners but with generics, you pay for what you get.

          • +5

@shutuptakemymoney101: Or try harder and get it for $51.88 or cheaper on their eBay store with a coupon.

          • -4

@shutuptakemymoney101: Lol, you're arguing that ONE TIME TONER replacement is cheaper than the whole printer? Just checkedb how many toner cartridges I've bought since purchasing my b&W later, and I see 3 (the one in the printer that doesn't count). That means I woukd have spent twice the price of the printer by now, just using the number you offered. What was your argument again?

          • +2

@shutuptakemymoney101: You actually buying the Toner and the printer came free with it.

        • I know. But stating that 4 cartridges cost more than the printer is a stretch. Long term it is true

      • hear me out….

a $2000 corolla and petrol prices.

        • +2

would love a $2000 corolla right now

          • +1

@tdw: idk. my last $2000 corolla is a stick shift and 1 of the gear is dodgy. needs a new battery..etc
            the bonnet sometimes pops open.

            depends on where you look.

        • +1

          I heard enough. cries

2 days ago a petrol station had prices at 162, today i saw it 216.

          • @LuslecGrace: ikr.
i know it's already proven that ink carts are more expensive then petrol but yeah… many other examples out there where the 'expendables' eventually outstrip the initial hardware investment in costs.

          • +3

@LuslecGrace: We lost the other numbers and just rearrange them now. Tomorrow it is 612, sorry.

    • +2

      Time is money my friend!

    • @happychappy1 if ya'll really truly sincerely an OZB'er —- then ya'll save monaaay by not buying a laser printer, or 4x toners and just drawing everything by hand. How good aye.

      • +1

        Using your own blood.

    • +4

It's a bit of a myth that buying another printer is cheaper than buying the toner/ink, especially for newer models.

You'll find that the misunderstanding comes from the capacity of the toner/ink that comes with the new printer.

i.e., a cheap laser monochrome printer may have a toner cartridge in there, but it will only be able to do like 500 pages….Then if you buy the replacement toner, the replacement can do like 5000 pages. So sure you can keep buying new printers, but it won't be able to do as much pages, and your $ per page spend will actually be much much higher.

Then of course for additional cost savings you can get generic brand toners, such as from inkstation.

    • +1

also cheaper going to officeworks, you don't always print in colour no need to buy the machine

      • Buy $8 cotton shirts from Big-W and you can print and iron on your own designs. I've made a bunch of NBA merch this way.

  • +2

Does anyone know if this is compatible with air printing? Looking for a decent printer to print using an iPad.

    TIA.

    • +1

It does. Works well. Does what it does. No complaints.

    • Yes it does. I paid just under $300 for the same printer back in July, so good price

    • EDIT: I have a HP.. these model numbers are all so similar. But if it says air print it should work out of the box.

      • +5

FYI model numbers are similar because the letters actually mean something.

        In this case C=Colour, D = Duplex and W = Wireless.

You will also see N for Network, which this has, but for some reason they didnt include it in the model number.

Also many vendors use numbers in model number to denote ppm, but in this example they haven't.

        • The more you know!

    • +1

I previously tried printing the air.
Didnt go well and got blank pages.

  • Anyone who has this can share if printing Cardstock (180gsm) would work?

    • I think it'll jam. The specs max out at 163gsm.

      https://support.brother.com/g/b/spec.aspx?c=au&lang=en&prod=…

That said I've done lunch paper bags using the manual feed (goody bags for a kids soccer team). Took a few test prints but upside down with the thickest part going in first led to a decent Black and White print. Did about 30 goody bags and used MS Word for clip art.

Would’ve bought if it had a scanner too! Can’t wait for a good deal on an All-in-one laser printer so i can chuck my shit $70 inkjet hp printer in the bin.

    • +2

Why not photo it? Most most have tap to scan or use a scan app on iPhone

      • +1

You know I was also waiting for a cheap MFC laser until I read your comment. You're right, I don't scan anything anymore!

      • +11

Never the same quality as a scanner. In rare occasions, I need to look professional when sending documents.

        • +8

lol, just make sure your feet aren't in the photo. lol

I'm in a profession where people on 100K+ a year send me photos (scans) of stuff and I still get the odd pair of feet. lol

        • +1

If you get the lighting right and use an app (I use ClearScanner) then the documents look just the same, if not better than using a flatbed scanner.

  • I have an old Epson Artisan 730 with a CISS ink system, always cost me about $90 to refill but hardly getting a workout. Am I better off with this and buying eBay toners for $55 (full set) when the time comes? how is the longevity on a toner set?

    • Need a scanner so more inclined on a Brother Wireless Colour MFC Laser Printer MFC-L3745CDW

      • +1

I run a Kyocera laser printer for all printing duties and an Epson Workforce Pro MFC with clogging ink jets that is now relegated to just scanning duties, this setup works well for me.

    • I ditched my Epson workforce inkjet after many years of infrequent use. I always used genuine cartridges but due to the intervals of use I had to clean the print heads nearly every time. This meant most of my ink was wasted. Got a Kyocera multifunction laser and it just works when I need it - no mucking around.

    • The Epson will print pictures well. This won't. It's only good for block graphics. Pictures will look very poor with all kinds of artifacts.

People usually only post when they’re unhappy.

Happy users have no reason to post.

I’m a happy user. Works fine. No issues.

      • You missed a prime opportunity to tell us if you posted a review. You just left us hanging.

  • Does that model come with the 3000 page black/1800 page color toner cartridges?
Looks like replacement cost of those cartridges is about $600 or nearly 170% of the original printer price!

    Something doesn't add up!
Edit meant to reply to the first poster who bought the 8260

    • +1

Generally, it is quite normal for ink to be more expensive than the printer. You get about 30% of ink when you buy a printer.
Manufacturers can sell a printer at a loss hoping to make it up on ink. Similar to gaming consoles, they know you’ll have to buy their games.

      • +1

        Doesnt apply to PS5

        • *similar to all gaming consoles except PS5, they know you’ll have to buy their games.

    • +1

A refill set of 4 generic but trusted cartridges costs around $100 on amazon.
Don’t buy from eBay, they’ll leak and be a pain generally.

      • +5

Not true. We’ve been very happy with Aussie Toner on eBay for years.

        • -1

          Maybe you’ve gotten lucky.
I’ve tried a few different “power sellers”.
At least one, generally two of the four would leak powder.

        • Yes, Aussie toner has worked well for me too

  • +3

Officeworks (OW) have it too? Price beat it by 5% = $236.55? :)

  • This or a Fuji XEROX??

    • Fuji xerox is superior to brother.

      • +1

Dont say that infront of your brother . It might not end so well for Fuji Xerox

  • +6

This is a great printer. It’s quick, has ethernet and wireless, AirPrint, duplex etc. Generic toner is about $50 for a full CMYK set delivered.

  • +1

10 years ago when i was printing a lot more stuff, i would've killed for this deal. colour laser, duplex, wireless, perfect

    • +1

COVID really killed whatever was left of paper printing. Only a few places insist on physical paper these days.

      • +2

yeah it's mostly a good thing. showing order confirmations on the phone instead of spending 8c at officeworks (+ fuel money) to print out something the store person will just chuck out after glancing at it.

birthday freebies have moved towards being claimed through an app/online. i can only think of Sandrinos that requires a print out.

      • JBHIFI…. online order for click and collect, 1 piece of paper is stuck/wrapped on the item, 1 printed for customer to sign and return, 1 for JBHIFI itself. LOL that’s 3 pieces of paper for an online order click and collect.

        • unfortunately it's way harder to change established (and working) processes. if you are on that end trying to 'sell' the idea of a flow that have marginal cost benefit or no cost benefit (because additional re-training, hardware..etc) , you'd understand.

even an org as big as amazon with their automation, they still use a decent number of paper in their entire flow.

smaller orgs have not that luxury. paper isn't going to just disappear and magically replaced by custom software and processes that does all the same things as before.
