Getting Qantas Points to Buy Ticket?

Hi so, I want to head interstate for cheap.

Is it true that you can buy a ticket with only using points?

My ticket costs 39400 points. I assume that means if i have those points i can get the ticket outright without spending actual money?

This may sound like an obvious question, but I've been screwed over before)

  • Do you already have 39,400 points? You might need to pay extra for airport taxes and fuel surcharges.

    • haha I have none. But I have seen people get a credit card for 20,000 and do other things to get points.

So i figure instead of paying $240. i could get points.

      • Part of that ticket priced will be taxes, which you still pay when paying with points

Depends if signing up for a cc, spending $3-$4k in 90 days, waiting for points and hoping for a reward seat being available on the flight you want is worth ~$200 to you

  • I don't recommend buying them but points are being sold in the classifieds section for 1 cent each. So your ticket really costs $394. Is it still cheap?

  • 39400 points sounds expensive unless it's an East coast to West Coast in Business Class Rewards flight. Sounds like you're paying a full cash fare with points which isn't the best way to go about it.

  • Minimum of $100 in taxes and fees for a domestic return flight…you'll quite likely find sale fares cheaper/similar cost once you've factored in the cost of earning points
Best value would be Classic Flight Rewards flights(Melb/Syd return economy around 16k)… limited availability though.

What you've likely selected is an any seat reward - basically Qantas converts your points at a rate of 0.6c to dollars and works out how many points is needed to cover the cost of the fare. What you get is basically what you would get buying the ticket outright i.e points on the flights etc.

What you need to choose is a Qantas award redemption. That will cost 8k points between Syd and Mel + taxes circa $50. Its a much better way to use your 39k points. When you fly on this ticket to don't get points whilst flying but you do get all the same benefits as paid like seat selection etc.

  • If you get a new credit card linked with Qantas you can pretty easily get 100,000 points if you meet their terms. Then use classic reward seats to book, as these a LOT less points. For domestic I wouldn't really recommend burning points.
