Google Apps Won't Work with Telstra SIM, but Work with Optus Wi-Fi?

Hi all,

Three days ago, all my Google apps completely carked it on my phone. My Google Play in particular threw up the message 'try again', so I had no way of even trying to update the apps to see if that would kick start them. My Gmail hasn't synced any messages for three days. And my Google Maps has been telling me I am offline for the past three days. This came on very suddenly and hasn't gone away.

I'm with Telstra (Boost).

However, everything works as normal when I use Optus Internet on WiFi.

To me, this doesn't make any sense?

My phone is 5 years old so I thought that was the problem…. But it definitely isn't, since Optus WiFi is working.

Any thoughts?

(yes I'm going to buy a new phone but I'm waiting for Black Friday/Click Frenzy sales…. Just need to chuck a defib on my current phone until then!)

Have you ran out of data on your boost plan?

  • Can you download data on the phone?
Can you do an internet speed test on the phone? What does it show as the down and up speeds?

    • I have no idea how to do that, sorry!

      • If you have no idea then ring them and ask if you have used up all of your allocated data for the current month.

        • No I definitely haven't. Still showing 17GB

I had the similar exp just yesterday on a Boost data used up phone. Today as the plan expired, it is back to normal. Boost/Telstra is doing something fishy.

You can turn off the SIM and try to update.

    • Thank you! Thought I was going crazy. I haven't run out of data and my plan rolled over about 10 days ago. Literally nothing has triggered it…. so strange…

Same thing started on Thursday for me. My Boost Mobile plan is still active. Other apps work fine. It's just Google apps with connectivity issues. Maps, Chat in particular.

Honestly thought I was going crazy. I'm not happy that you're going through this too, but happy to know I'm not alone! Started Thursday for me too.

While using Optus WiFi, I have managed to update all my Google apps and they seem to be working now on data. So, so strange…. But at least they're working now. So try updating your Google apps on WiFi 😊

    • Possibly unrelated, but one of my websites hosted on VentraIP couldn't connect to Google's SMTP server on Thursday.

I had this happen the past week, not sure why. I think there was something going on?

So frustrating to have this happen with absolutely no warning. I was so confused….

Same as others - happened to me on the weekend. The issue went away after using the apps on wifi.

  • Yep same experience here. Called google support and all.
Have time and data left on my plan as well.
Is there a fix? I restarted, airplane mode swapped dozens of times. I've noticed that the web versions seem to work still. Just the apps that dont.

I have updated all my Google apps over Optus WiFi and they're now working on data - so, so strange! There's the fix, I guess shrug

I've also had issues with some of my google apps when on telstra network (wifi is fine), started on Friday and has been a pain as I use Google maps quite often.

I thought it was my phone too, but now we know it's something else!

It's so weird! And why just Google? Mystery….

I would guess it's a Telstra issue - maybe related.

PS: thanks for the thread. Always nice solving these small mysteries.

        • You're welcome! Good to know I wasn't alone and that there's a workaround of sorts 😊

          * DNS related

  • I had the same issue, Google apps not syncing on boost. Every other internet related thing was fine.

Tried deleting app data, restarting, logging out of google.

The fix for me was to connect using a different DNS server

  • Sounds like DNS. Change your DNS settings to something like Cloudflare, 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1

Here is a Whirlpool thread on the issue, all people who report being affected are with Telstra (or Boost) and use an android phone

  • I also could not connect to Google services via my iPhone for a small period of time on Thursday. I have a regular Telstra SIM.
