Toilet Seat Replacement - Hinges Not Coming out

Any handyman, handylady or plumber who could let me know how to get the old toilet seat hinges out? The screws keep turning on themselves. I can’t access the spigots from the side of the toilet either. Should I cut the head of the screws and push the spigots in or try to pull it out with pliers?

  • Are the screws nylon and do you need to reuse them for the new lid?

    • Not nylon and I have new screws and spigots for the new seat

  • Take the plastic cap off the top and then use and Allen key.
There is a decorative cap over the screw head.

    • Yep. Already taken off but the screws keep turning. I think the spigots are turning with it.

  • +1

Any photos? Preferably of the top of the screws and the back/side of the bowl where any possible rear/side access is??

Try to pry the screw/bolt up while turning to undo - try to get pressure on the upper edge of the nut to stop it turning.

  • A couple of pics might help as depends on the lid.

Are there wing-nuts on the bottom? There may be a cover over the head of the bolt which if removed, might be a spot for an Allen key or similar to stop it spinning

    • Just added the photos

No wing-nuts and caps have already been removed.

      • if You can’t get your hand underneath to feel a wingnut or anything, it’s likely there is a plug inserted to the loo base to screw into, bit like the thing you’d use to screw in a masonry wall . You may be able to put enough tension on it by using a screwdriver to lever up the black plastic to prevent it from turning.

Search ‘toilet seat spigot’ to see what pets are usually provided with these.

The spigots are fixed to the black plastic and do not unscrew.

  • I am keen to know this too, one of my hinges is loose and no amount of turning tightens it. Also no wingnut to hold underneath to tighten.

  • Depends largely on the design of the lid. I’ve seen a few different types. Got a picture?

    • Yes updated in post

  • About a week back I heard an almighty crash from the bathroom. The missus had just used the throne and the seat fell to the floor. It took me a couple of minutes to figure it out. The seat assembly slides into a slot on the bracket which is bolted onto the throne. You have to remove the seat to get at the bolts. Close the seat till it's flat on the throne and pull the seat assembly firmly away from the water tank. When you put it back just make sure it locks in place. The missus was a bit disturbed and all I could say was Sh!t happens and I got into trouble. Just a thought. This seat was about 9 years old. I haven't done a study into this so ones of different ages could be different.

  • Quick update after 150$ ouch. One hinge snapped and the other was sawn off. The rest was pushed in.
