Looking for a Good Cardiologist for Initial Consultation in Melbourne

Got a GP referral for consultation with Cardiologist. Don't know who is good/not good so after some recommendations from people who had experience (thr. self or family/friends).

Google search spit so many clinics. Not sure about the service.

Can someone recommend please? (Only Medicare, preferrable in South East).

Thanks

Update+++

The reason I mentioned "Only Medicare" is not looking for 100% bulk billed service but saying "I have only medicare & no private health cover".

My bad words :(

Reason for consulation is to take expert opinion on "discomfort in left chest". ECG & Stress echo is fine no issues.
GP is suggesting to take an opinion of cardiologist.

Havent you heard? This is ozcardiologist. The only place where you have access to hundreds, if not thousands of experts*. Ask away.

    *not an expert

'Can someone recommend please? (Only Medicare, preferrable in South East)'

You want it fully bulked billed?

    • +6

      Yeah.

I want someone who blitzed year 12, spent a decade of further learning about the human body, then spent years studying the human heart and circulatory system and only charge me $73 for a 1 hour consult so I'm not out of pocket after my Medicare claim. Only seems fair.

Cardiologist's fault for not leaving school at year 9 to become a plumber if he/she wants to bill more than $73 an hour.

and it also has to be a good cardiologist who bulk bills which will be about zero unless the OP has a health care card?

      • Specialists may have a discount for concession card holders, but usually there is still a moderate out of pocket charge.

I tend to find that good health care practitioners generally charge more but tend to have better outcomes.

    • … and that second option is why our public health system is f'ed

  • What symptoms do you need investigation? The more serious, the more you should consider non bulk billed. This is your health!

  • go to your GP!!

Hard to say which cardiologist, really depends on your presentation. Echo? Interventional? EP?

  • What type of Cardiologist, there's different specialties in Cardiology and it's hard to recommend without knowing more about your circumstances. I'd go with yoru GPs advice

  • Can someone recommend please? (Only Medicare, preferrable in South East).

If there really is a Cardiologist that does bulk bill, the waiting list would be months.

I did go to one in Richmond last year on a recommendation and I had good conversation with the lady at reception (doctor's wife) while waiting. That was the first time I was there and she never ended up charging me directly for any of the consultations after that. (She seemed to feel sorry for me because of my condition).

You dont go to a Cardiologist expecting to be bulk billed !! My father goes to a great cardiologist. Your out of pocket some but Medicare also pays some.

  • Not sure theres any real way to tell. But as an OzBargainer, you might call a few clinics and ask if they group Medicare costs.
Most apparatus used is subject to a cost and an initial Medicare fee, but the Medicare fee is only charged once per day. If they arrange these on the same day where possible (eg, Xray plus ECG plus Stress Test) you pay a single daily fee. If they spread them out whenever you pay each time…….

Definitely worthwhile to search up exactly what you're going for. My dr recommended someone who was absolute garbage. I googled what I have and found a cardiologist that specialises in it and saw him.

  • Hi OP, I see Dr Jeffrey Allison.
He is part of 3-4 clinics across the south east (Brighton, Moorabbin, Monash Clayton and 1 other location I can't remember).

I think he's great for a number of reasons:

    1. He also performs procedures on the heart (ablation, pacemakers etc)
    2. He explains things very well
    3. His team works hard to fit you into the schedule

For a consultation you will have to pay out of pocket, but you get around $80-90 back via Medicare

I saw Jeffrey Allison too for an ablation.
My cardiologist is Greg Szto at Peninsula Heart Centre in Langwarrin, can't get much more south than that in the metro area!

ps. Bulk Bill and Specialist are mutually exclusive terms, but pretty much every Cardiologist will be a medicare provider. Good luck OP.

      • Out of curiosity, how did your ablation go?
I had 4 over 10 years (all unsuccessful) but was advised that I have a complex heart issue.
Considered this a bit unlucky since the success rate for SVT is 95% to 98%.

  • I go to Melbourne Heart in Brighton. Fantastic people. But there are out of pocket expenses.

If you have heart problems, then a few dollars in out of pocket expenses is the least of your worries. No point saving money on the consultation just to pay for the funeral.
