Virgin Travel Bank Expiry Extension Using Refundable Tickets

I have Virgin travel bank worth $824 expiring in Jan 2023. No plans to travel anytime soon and if I pre-book, it will be hard to guess the dates.
If I book flexi tickets with random dates, will I be able to cancel the tickets with another travel bank credit potentially increasing the expiry date?

I looked into fare rules and couldn't find anything barring such move, but I am not sure.
Just wondering if anyone else has done this previously and managed to keep their travel bank credit alive.

  • What about ring them and ask if they can extend it, if they say No, ask them about your plan A ? 😉

  • If I remember correctly last time I did I incurred an $80 fee for doing it in the credit I received back.

(7). Cancelling a Future Credit fare booking
    b. In the event you cancel a booking made using your Future Flight credit (as full or partial payment) and your Future Credit fare rules permit a cancellation, we will provide you with a new Future Flight credit for the amount you paid for your fare and flight extras, less any applicable cancellation fees or non-refundable amounts (for example, amounts paid for services that you used prior to cancellation). You will not be entitled to receive cash refunds or other forms of travel credits. Please refer to the Future Credit fare rules.

This would depend on the class of fare you purchased. OP theoretically could book fares in a bucket with no cancellation fees.

Also interested. Have $1000 expiring at the same time.

    • This will not work. You need to either sell the travel bank or repurchase tickets for actual travel.
If you cancel the tickets, you will lose all balance.

6.4. The Expiry Date of any returned travel credits will revert to the original Expiry Date that applied before the travel credits were used. If the original Expiry Date has passed when the refund occurs, the travel credits have expired and will not be returned to Travel Bank.
