Looking for honest feedback on this vs the Bose Smart Soundbar 600 (similar pricing) for a small to medium room? Cheers

Suss the Samsung too. I just got one and great for the price.

Well the main difference would be that the Canton does come with a subwoofer, whether as the Bose doesn't (unless you're paying an additional $650 for one), so you would get better depth and bass out of this one for sure.
The only benefit of the BOSE would be that it has the atmos and smart app compatibility. If it's purely based on sound I would definitely go with the Canton, but if you're after the other features then the other one would be the one to go with :)

      • Nice one- thanks for your honesty!

With respect to the Atmos, if my main viewing material was Kayo sport and streamed TV drama/sci-fi episodes, would the Atmos upmixing be something I would get benefit from vs the extra bass from the Canton?

I had a Canton DM50 for a few years which was great but the amp failed out of the blue and no-one in Adelaide wants to touch it due to difficulty getting replacement modular parts.

I am not sure of the value of this product due to lack of ARC and eARC, 2.1 channels (no discrete centre channel), atmos and it is several years old which in sound bar technology can be quite a step back in quality and features.

      Review: https://www.whathifi.com/canton/dm-900/review

I think there are better buys out there and would not recommend this.

The Bose looks very promising as it is new and brings up their midrange products up to the existing competiation (in the past, only their 900 range had features found in other competitor mid range products).

Consider your priorities; along with your rooms size, are the latest features such as eARC and atmos worth the premium or to future proof your purchase or is it worth it to spend that money on a standard ARC and non-atmos soundbar setup that is higher in quality in other areas. Some midrange atmos devices are average at best e.g. Beam 2 and 'virtual atmos' as they do not have upward firing speakers.

      • Thanks for your input- having not experienced Atmos in a sound bar, what sort of content best utilises this feature?

Flagship theatrical and steaming titles: https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?sound_mixes=dolby_atmos

I personally do not have a Atmos soundbar due to the room setup and prioritised instead sound quality and bass without subwoofer (Denon S716 on discount) for the room and do not have the room configuration to allow for surround speakers. Other friends and family have the Samsung Q930B and Q990B and the surround is amazing for the price and ease of setup configuration for general TV shows and sports that do not have atmos.

ARC and eARC is a different matter. I prefer the convienance this feature and would not consider a soundbar in the last several years that that does not have it.

The same for a feature to boost vocals and/or discrete centre channel.

At this posted pricepoint the majority did not have eARC or atmos until recently however manufacturers seems to be in the process of cutting over to a new range of sound bar models and it is becoming the norm.

For soundbars with subwooders there have been a lot of deals going around and with Black Friday it looks to be ongoing until Christmas until stocks run out.

Here is one I commented on earlier that recently went out of stock: https://www.myer.com.au/p/lg-312ch-440w-dolby-atmos-soundbar…

Samsung also have many soundbars on discount with subwoofer above and below this price point.

          • @BlueGlowOne: Great points, thanks. I didn't really factor in the e-arc as my last Canton soundbase had IR learning so you I was able to "duplicate" the on/off signal from the TV remote so it would turn the soundbase off at the same time. Assume the D900 has this function too.

      Thank you :)

  • Is it true that the dialogue comes out in Cantonese?

Apparantly yes, I just finished watching IP man.

I would have thought it would come out German, seeing as these are made in Germany haha :)

      • That's just funky, Dan.

The $800 Q930b is much better.
