Volunteer 'opportunities' for FIFA Women's World Cup 2023

Volunteer applications for the FIFA Women's World Cup 2023 are now open:
https://www.fifa.com/tournaments/womens/womensworldcup/austr…

  • Approx. 5,000 volunteers needed across Australia and New Zealand
  • Volunteers will be assisting in stadiums, training venues, FIFA Fan Festival sites, hotels, transport hubs and airports, and roles run throughout the tournament starting from 25 June to 22 August 2023
  • Need to be available for a minimum of 5 - 12 shifts, pay your own travel expenses (if not in a host city), attend training sessions
  • Apart from 'behind-the-scenes experience' and 'a lifetime of memories and experiences', volunteers get full training, a uniform, meals and refreshments on each shift, and free public transport to your shifts

I can understand those that want to volunteer for something like an Olympics, or Commonwealth Games, where the volunteers have a connection to the host city or region. But this opportunity is provided by FIFA, one of the largest sport organisations in the world. I would have expected FIFA to at least compensate the 'volunteers' with a basic pay or compensation for their time.

What are your thoughts?

Some of the roles are:
- Access Management Volunteer (Spectator Services)
- Accreditation Volunteer
- Anti-Doping Volunteer

Why pay people when you can abuse their passion and get free labour?

It's the same with multi-billion dollar sports like Formula 1. All marshalls and support roles at each track are volunteers.

The main reason is because there's enough passionate people that would do it for free and love of the sport, so why pay them…

    • Empathy is what makes the world go round.

      • +2

        pretty sure its massive profits

    • +4

Good point, and I can understand why someone with specific experience as a car racing marshall or similar may be required for a car racing event.
But I've just edited my post to detail some of the listed volunteer roles. Surely those like hospitality, cleaning, IT, etc., should be contracted roles? Some of them don't even get anywhere near a venue.

      • +12

That's actually a very good distinction. You're absolutely right. No excuse there.

        • Human Rights Volunteer

        The irony.

  • +5

I would have expected FIFA to at least compensate the 'volunteers' with a basic pay or compensation for their time.

I think the whole point of getting people to volunteer is so they can avoid doing this.

  • +8

FIFA makes billions selling TV matches and isn't a local biz, don't be shortchanged due to your passion.

  • +5

volunteer for a profitable and so called largest sport organisation in the world? They can suck my ass.

    • +4

kiss my ass is fare enough, suck my ass is super graphic

      • And considerably more pleasurable

        And risky

  • +3

What a joke (I'd understand if some roles were, but 5k?!)

    • There are quite a few venues, so duplication of roles exists.

  • +1

I understand how charities and not for profits are legally able to get unpaid volunteers though anyone know what the exemption is for FIFA?

    • I imagine if someone volunteers then they had done so voluntarily (i.e. waived all 'employment' rights etc)

      • +4

Usually a person can't legally do that. Just like they can't wave the right to be paid the correct minimum wage. The exceptions I'm aware of are it's part of vocational training or working for a NFP. I take it there must be another exemption if they are doing jobs that could be paid employment.

Ahhh seems FiFA is a not for profit. Should have take my own normal advice and Googled it!

        • Very profitable for a not for profit…

  • +2

they should pay people using qatars bribe money.
    stuff working for free.

    • Some of the "FIFA Partners" include Qatar Energy and Qatar Airways.

  • +3

Is this a joke? I can understand volunteering at an Animal Shelter, Food Bank etc, but for FIFA, a multi-million dollar revenue company according to statista, yeah no thanks

Edit: This is a little hard to overlook
"Fifa set to exceed US$6.44bn revenue target for 2019 to 2022 cycle"
"World soccer’s governing body reported US$766m income for 2021" (Same link as above)

    • i agree but Tennis Australia do it every year for the Australian open, and somehow no one moans about it -despite making over 500m and paying players and executives millions to compete and put on the event

  • +4

Volunteering for a company making $1b+ profits: hard pass.

  • +3

5000 volunteers needed.. That's 50 volunteers per spectator

  • +1

Did they get enough slaves in Qatar

  • -3

Nothing wrong with profit maximisation in a capitalistic society.

  • +2

Wait, do volunteers get free access to any of the games?

I know people who do AO every year because they are court side and get to watch all day. And I knew a lot more people who did it when they were younger and had time but no money.

But yeah these roles don’t give you that at all.

    What are your thoughts?

A lot of these positions, like "Venue Technology Volunteer", "Venue Management Volunteer" sound like they require specialised skills so I doubt they'd just want anyone off the street. I can't see many people who have these skills wanting to volunteer during their 'free time', especially if they already do it as their usual day job.

FIFA should really be 'hiring' for these positions rather than calling for volunteers. But I guess there's nothing to stop them from trying to get something for nothing!

If the womens sports made some actual money they wouldnt need volunteers. Women can do what they want, but women have the athletic ability, in general to 14yr old boys, not exactly exciting sport that will draw numbers. This "woke pretend" that womens sports will rival mens sports for viewership is hilarious.

Let the women play tennis and ride horses, expecting them to compete in afl/soccer and expect people to flock to their cause is a woke pipe dream. Go woke go broke.

I also find it hilarious that most of the activists for women's sport are the type of people who will never attend or watch a sporting event of either gender.

"Women should be paid the same as men!"

"Go and buy tickets to a women's sporting event then."

"Sorry, I don't have time. These tweets aren't going to tweet themselves."

your are essentially describing every left winger/socialist ever - hypocrites - thus is why communism doesnt work

….but women have the athletic ability, in general to 14yr old boys

But but but…. "we're all the same!"

Someone will try to silence you soon! lol

  • The OzBargain Boys Club (and I mean boy in the traditional sense of being a not yet mature man) is out in force today.

I volunteered and worked during the Sydney Olympics, and loved every minute of it. Being "part" of the event meant far more than being a mere spectator.

I am sure that there will be plenty of willing and excited volunteers for this event.

Not sure what you are referring to here. Are you making reference to the post by lew380?

    • I volunteered and worked during the Sydney Olympics, and loved every minute of it. Being "part" of the event meant far more than being a mere spectator.

I understand that, and acknowledged it in my original post. These 'opportunities' are across 9 cities in two countries (plus maybe some additional locations). I don't think the level of engagement will be the same as the Sydney Olympics, apart from a couple of the major sites.

    • FIFA admits it was caught off guard by 'unprecedented' 2023 Women's World Cup ticket demand as Aussie fans are left empty-handed

I have no doubt that attendance will be near capacity, but that probably makes the case for FIFA's reliance on volunteers even less feasible to me.

    • Stating the elephant in the room is for the boys?!?
