iPad Pro as a Primary Device for Work

Hi all

With Apple now having m1 and m2 chips in their iPad pros, has anyone transitioned to using this as their primary device for work?

If your job is on g-suite, or similar, it seems you could easily use it for 99% of tasks?

Not sure on the challenges of using an iPad to manage things like excel in gsuite, but I suspect with a paired keyboard, it would be easy to do basic formulas etc.

On the flip side, having the ability to use a pen could be quite beneficial for work

Curious to see if anyone has taken that leap and where are the shortcomings

I had this hugely romanticised dream of the iPad Pro m1 being the perfect device for my line of work and for like… 80% of the time it is doing consults with client in office or on site, But just stupid stuff like the Magic Keyboard not having f keys, gimped photoshop app, no indesign, a joke of multitasking (stage manager grrrr) despite m1 being powerful enough really drive me up the wall. Making do by rdping to my desktop lol

    As a media consumption device it’s 10/10

    • If you're a graphic designer who needs InDesign then of course iPad won't suit you. Most people don't even know what InDesign is though.

      • Not a graphic designer but sometimes need to bash out some custom data sheets for clients

        • If you're using a suite of software that cost $100 a month, the Photoshop usage and InDesign usage you mentioned, you can probably call yourself a graphic designer.

@AustriaBargain: Hah if it was up to me I’d still be using good old 2010 ms publisher

@Jimothy Wongingtons: Microsoft Publisher is surprisingly capable. But Adobe is still king. Being able to place Photoshop documents into an InDesign document, and then editing the Photoshop document and have those edits automatically appear in InDesign is a huge timesaver.

    • I think I am in your shoes

I think I would be highly annoyed by spending $2000 for an iPad (pro, with pen and keyboard), when MacBook pros are virtually the same price

iPads are really only useful to access Facebook.

      • You mean Workplace?

There's a couple of die hards at work who try but there are some oddies when doing stuff like sharing content into meetings. Mostly around multitasking.

    Some end up using Citrix…

The only thing iPad is better than a MacBook is the ability to use Apple Pencil and PDF work, everything else is harder to do

    • Yeh I tend to agree.

Ideally I’d just have an iPad for limited use, but can’t justify the outlay for potentially limited use

  • The file management is a drawback. As a software developer it doesn’t have any local compilation possibility.

    No

    • Insightful as always JV

  • Those Microsoft surface devices look alright, never used one but being able to use it in tablet or laptop mode seems decent.

Surface is where we send the ipad people when they give up.

  • anyone use citrix workspace on an ipad? any limitations (other than keyboard differences)?

    • the mouse is problematic - there is some emulation but old habits die hard

    • Even though everything is there, it feels like something is missing when you use it resulting in a loss of productivity. It could be the function row keys or the way that keyboard shortcuts don't quite feel the same, but you'll still be able to get all your work done.

  • I think some manager and executives did this , works for them because they don't do any real work just send email
