(Sydney) Solar Panels Installation - OzBargain Choice

We looking to install solar panels. There has been spike in terms of random door knocking from various companies with goverment rebate.

Just curious if people have recommendation of company and also what minimum unit (i think its kw) we should have for capacity. Is it also standard to have battery for storage as well for night time mode?

First recommendation would be for someone that doesn't need to door knock or use ex cricket stars to do their advertising.

Battery is still generally not financially beneficial if you're only using $ as the justification.

    • Agreed :). Thats why i am checking what is the ozbargain choice as i would suspect lots of modern solar panels now.

You can use the search facility on the top right to see if previous posts have asked this before and what was discussed.

    • Thanks

  • I’d also recommend the Solar Quotes.com.au website to get some general information, so you can understand the quotes and ask questions. I’m in Sydney and used RK Solar & Consulting earlier this year to install a 5.07KW solar system with microinverters for $6K. I also obtained quotes from about 2 other installers that I got from the Solar Quotes website, asked questions, checked reviews and negotiated the price. The person I dealt with at RK Solar was good (nice, not pushy) and the installation was pretty smooth (took 2 days because of rain). We had already a smart (consumption) meter installed for free a few years ago by our energy retailer, PowerShop, so didn’t have to pay for that. We haven’t had any issues since installation. We went with a smaller system (some companies will say they only do minimum 6KW), but spent more to go with microinverters rather than string. We didn’t look at batteries as I think the return/payback is not worth it at the moment. Since installation, our electricity bills have certainly gone down - our main use is charging our EV and aircon.

    • I used RK solar too, and they were bit of a mess to deal with. Mediocre installation and not much of project planning. They dont have needed electrician working for them, but have to outsource it. At one point the electrician asked me what the smart meter was, and if I wanted it installed.

I got LG Neo 2 installed on 2 strings, east for the morning sun, and north for the rest of the day.

Oh RK forgot to send the installation details to Electricity Australia. But EA was kind enough to pay my feed-in retrospectively.

If you have straight forward installation, newish powerboard, enough phases, and no out of the ordinary, then RK has very good prices. You might have to manage the project a bit.

    • Thanks a lot. Appreciate it

  • In terms of how many panels you need, you need to give us more information about your power usage. How many people will be living in the household? What's your current electricity usage? Do you have gas or electric hot water? Do you have other high power usage devices such as pool filter, crypto mining rigs, grow tents, etc?
