Painting Baby Crib - Which Paint to Use?

Hi just trying to do a DIY painting for baby crib,

After a bit of research, I found that I can't just randomly paint with anything and it has to be low voc and non toxic .

Can experts suggest good choice please?

Go to a branded paint store with the color you want and ask them as they will know exactly what to use (Bunnies is a hardware store).

You also need to know if the existing paint is oil or water based, which you can google how to test to get the answer.

  • Yeah definitely want it non toxic as babies love to chew in the rails…

Try to get a lead based one, it lasts longer and subdues babies :P

    • Or that uranium paint, glows when you shine uv light on it for that Fallout game series theme

    • Any product link please

      • Just get anything off aliexpress.

And make sure it's very very cheap.

        • Nah, trying to get something local

I hate to be the one to point out the obvious, but you know this is a joke right?

If op doesn't know the dangers of lead paints, I'm very worried for the kid.

        • Yeah , well aware of not to use any chemical ones.

Is it solid wood? If so the absolute safest finish would be to take it back to completely bare wood and finish with a natural oil (eg linseed) or beeswax etc. All paints, even if they're non toxic, contain microparticles, typically titanium dioxide but there are also others. Of course this is completely unavoidable in the modern world, avoid it here and the kid will encounter them elsewhere anyway.

    • Yeah its the wooden one

You could have a look here https://www.birdonthehill.com.au/ you’ll probably need paint and a top coat.

Personally I’d be hesitant to paint a cot for the reasons you point out. Hopefully yours won’t be a cot chewer, mine has never chewed his cot.

The other thing to consider if you are getting a second had cot is to ensure the mattress fits perfectly. ie the is no gaps around the sides for baby to get stuck in. The Australian standard is that there is no more than 1.5cm difference in width or length, so the gap between the mattress and cot edges should be no more than 7.5mm. I deliberately bought the cot and mattress from the same brand and store for this reason. This should be pretty achievable if the cot is a standard size but less so if it’s older and a different size to mattresses being sold.

Lastly something I didn’t realise until my baby was close to arrive is that most babies don’t go straight into their cot. Many people have them in the parents room in a bassinet if the parents room doesn’t fit a cot. There are no standards for bassinets, but there’s some info here https://rednose.org.au/article/bassinets

  • For anyone looking the same thing in future, ignore posts that talks about lead paint. It should be downvoted.

Here is the paints that we have in au with zero to low voc.
