Excessive HDD Active Time

Another dumb computer question. Have 2 2tb drives in software raid 1. When doing anything that requires a decent amount of disk access, one of the disks goes to 100% active time, is very noisy, and things go slow. If I run a VM, it is painfully slow. Here are a couple of screenshots, this is transferring a 6gb file to another folder on the same drive -

Really regretting doing raid at all at this point.

Why not unraid them and use one to automatically make backups at night.

    • This is what I did

    • It's probably what I'll end up doing, was just wondering if this is a common raid thing, or if one of my HDDs is dying a terrible death.

Why not do a health check on the drives, see what the SMART thing says, how many bad sectors and such.

  • Probably windows RAID doing a clean up, this happens occasionally to me as well. But I'm using SMR drives.

  • Check the S.M.A.R.T. details to see if one of the drives is unhealthy.

  • What other things are you regretting? You seem like a s.m.a.r.t. Kind of guy

Lots of noise is not a good thing for your drives.

    Check layer 8 errors
