Laptop Bargain or Nah (Used Alienware $1600)

Hi guys, I’m interested in buying a gaming laptop and was wondering if this is a bargain. Priced at $1600. It’s second hand but in as new condition. Specs are as follow:

Alienware m15 r5
AMD Ryzen R7 5800H
Windows 11 Home (64 bit) English
NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 3070 8GB GDDR6
RAM 16GB, 8GBx2, DDR4, 3200MHz
512GB PCIe M.2 SSD
Display 15.6" FHD (1920 x 1080) 165Hz 3ms with ComfortView Plus

Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks!

  • It’s second hand but in as new condition.

Where are you buying this from? An individual or a business? Refurbed or 'in new condition'?

    • Buying it from an individual, I’ve seen the product itself, it’s no doubt in as new condition and still have half a year’s warranty.

as long as the warranty is transferrable under t&c's then sure.

Bargain. I would buy it IMO. A laptop with a RTX3070 are around $2500+ … and warranty. No brainer

That's a big screen for a low resolution. Higher resolution is good for gaming, like if you play Overwatch you can have the game set to 4K so all the overlays appear in crisp 4K (and there's a lot of overlays in Overwatch so you will notice) but the 3D parts of the game itself you can set to another resolution so you can hit 60hz or 165hz or whatever your monitor refresh rate is. It's the best of both worlds.

Since when is 15" a big screen? and FHD is low resolution? lol

      • It's only a 15" screen. It will make a little difference with a higher res. The seller wants $1600 for a laptop that is worth way more than twice the price and a year old. I would jump if I was the buyer. I was in the same boat and bought a similar flagship model second hand a year old (GTX1080 17R4) for similar $1400 at the time (I think it was worth like $5K or something new; ridiculous) and I'm still using it playing games. Yes, it's not the fastest now but still packs a punch… and no faults thus far

I would disagree that the laptop is worth twice the price. The exact model has been $1799 brand new in a previous sale.

I paid ~$2k for my similarly spec'ed Legion 5 Pro, and got ~$200 cashback from Cash Rewards.

So $1600 is a good price for it but definitely worth comparing around.

          • @CodeXD: Wow. I didn't see that. Then i agree with you 💯

an 27" 4K screen (what people normally have) have a PPI (Pixel per inch square) of 163.18.

a 24" 1080p screen (what company normally use for Office Monitor) have a PPI of 91.79

      this laptop with a 15" 1080p screen have a PPI of 146.86.

If you really should call this low resolution?

      • -2

Yeah I would. 15.6 inch is 141.21 ppi actually. Though $1600 isn't a huge budget for a gaming laptop so 1440p or 4k might be a stretch.

        • I wonder what do you use as your daily driver.

          • @OMGJL: 13 inch MacBook. The ppi is only 227. I'd like to upgrade to the larger MacBooks with 254 ppi. Hopefully one day they have 300+ ppi. Don't tell me the human eye can't discern things smaller than that when I can see a human hair 50 microns thick on my display clear as day.

            • @AustriaBargain:

when I can see a human hair 50 microns thick on my display

first it depends on how far you sit to spot a pixel difference. Hence why people buy 1080p projector, Hence people buy 85" 4K TV rather than 43" 4k screen for content consumption.

second a hair on screen is a obstruction of light source, hence it certainly supposed to be more noticeable.

3rd, higher PPI does make text display a lot more sharper —- until a certain degree where you get diminishing return.

4th, it's way harder to spot pixels when you see image (gaming) than text.

My point is high resolution is good but you don't need to over stretch it.

              • @OMGJL: Individual pixels not being lit on an OLED display is also an obstruction of a light source.

an 27" 4K screen (what people normally have)

        they do?

        • Dell constantly have their low end 4k screen special at around just over $300, if you still rocking 1080p 60, you probably should either consider upgrade to a 2k144 or 4k next time when they are on special again.

I think its a good price, I would go for it, even more with the warranty

    Why is he selling it?

    • Because he no longer wants it*

      *Probably

    • The cat peed on the keyboard.

      • since when do you bold only part-words?

        am I witnessing evolution?

          bold only part-words?

          Less keyboard wear and tear…

          • @jv: I don't know about this new technique. It seems less effective, wear&tear is of secondary importance.

            But….perhaps it'll grow on me.

  • If you can get this brand-new for a couple of hundred dollars more I would be doing that
