I assume the Penatly Box is reserved for those who persistently launch personal attacks, encourage negativity on the site or are just plain stupid.
What (other) things can earn you time in the Penalty Box?
Does each stint in the Penalty Box increase from the last one? (1st offence = 1 week, 2nd = 2 weeks)
How many times can you be put Penalty Box before something a little more long term and permanent is applied?
Just looking at our list:
SPAM, Sockpuppeting (Artificial Voting, commenting), Personal Attacks, Trolling, Counterfeit items, Ghost Accounts, Foul Language, Circumventing ban (e.g. rep posting limits).
Site-Wise:
SPAM, Counterfeits, 3rd party affiliate or masking sites (e.g. bit.ly) etc..
There are currently 448 domains banned (which were all done manually).
User-wise:
SPAM would be #1 usually from China or India.
The rest of the offences make up a fraction of the SPAMMERS. Probably ghost accounts.
Our guidelines are more clear cut so each moderator can deal with the situation in the same way. Being an idiot or stupid is not an offence. Things that are not a bargain are up to the community to decide. Things that are clearly SPAM (again usually from China) are removed/banned.

Ghost account
Lots of these. We put an account (from China again) in the penalty box for being a ghost account. Something got lost in translation and they thought we suspected them of being a ghost (the scary type).
The point in the penalty box is to make the user aware that they need to modify their behaviour. It is on a sliding scale depending on the offence but re-offenders will get put in for a longer time. A simple conversation can go miles so if there is an issue anyone can feel free to contact us.

You should have seen it when I tried to explain sockpuppeting.
The question is how many times has JV been in there?
Would be interesting to see who is currently in the Penalty Box, same way we can see who is online.
Maybe even how long they are in it for.
Might even help for those "Wonder what ever happened to <insert name>?" moments.

You can just go to <insert name>'s user profile page to find out whether he/she/it has been in penalty box, and whether there's an expiry.
As of who is currently in the penalty box, I think there are simply too many pages listing all the sockpuppets and their ghost accounts. Not really helpful I think.

If you are currently in the Penalty Box, you will not be able to post deals, comments, forum topics or vote. You will have to wait until the penalty expires, or use the Talk with a Moderator Forum forum.
So what can you do while you're in the penalty box? If it's a permaban , wouldn't it make more sense to delete your account?
Being an idiot or nuisance generally gets you into the Penalty Box.
Spam can get you there (e.g you keep posting advertising or stuff that isn't a bargain)
Abuse of email messaging (happened some time ago - some member made accounts to spam members)
Duplicate accounts and sockpuppets get the Banhammer of Permaban (so not strictly penalty box, more like account removal)
Not sure if Brodening will get you there :)
