Do Glass Kettles Get Hot on The outside?

Hi All,

I’ve always had a metal kettle in the past.

Picked up Breville Crystal Clear Glass Kettle today via the click frenzy deal (Model: BKE750CLR4JAN1).

Just before I made the purchase I compared the Breville product with a Sunbeam Maestro Glass Kettle. I read the reviews that the outside of the kettle remains cool.

Ok, got back home. Hooked up the breville. Looks great! Heats up the water quickly but I touched the outside surface (glass) and it was hot!! I was like the Sunbeam was had cooler surface! But is the breville one hot?

Can’t seem to get a straight answer on the internet.
Can anyone please confirm if the glass surface on the breville kettle (above model) gets hot? Or is this a fault unit?

Thanks

Don't have that exact model but do have a glass Breville kettle and it definitely gets hot. I thought it was obvious it would get hot. Never used a glass or ceramic mug with tea/coffee?

double walled ones dont get hot or no hotter than normal kettles. The Sunbeam one is double walled

      • Well yes, totally different design gives totally different results.

Unless they are double glazed, how would you prevent the glass from heating up if it is in contact with water at 100Β°C ?

Even then, glass is mediocre at heat dissipation. You'll need a vacuum in between, but it will still have some transfer due to the nature of radiation (heat is a form radiation).

But yes, in general they all heat up, but not to a point where it is "too hot" (unless it's just my tolerance too high).

Are you suggesting this gives off EM radiation 😲 ?

        • Do you have a Geiger Counter, mine's in the shop ?

    Knit it a nice sweater

  • I have a Breville kettle. I think it is the model (BKE595) before the one you mentioned. Had it for more than 5 years. It is single walled glass. It does get hot. I usually boil a jug in the morning and decant to a thermos which keeps it hot all day. Sometimes I forget to decant it straightaway and touch the outside to see if it is still hot or needs to be reboiled.

Laws of thermodynamics says yes, unless double walled.

You should try picking up the kettle by the handle

    • Lmfao πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
      Ofcourse I use the handle!!

Just got curious and touched the glass thinking it will be cool but … by reading the comments, looks like that would need be a doubled wall kettle and this one is not.

  • Would only be cool to touch if the glass was a vacuum.

    It's your mind playing games.
Put your hand on the glass for 30 seconds, let your mind get used to it and it wont be hot anymore.

  • Why is this an issue though? It has a handle does it not?

It because you're testing it with your hands - Try your face :-D
