Is this just a fancy pants Chromecast Audio?

    • Seems that way - speaking of which, are there any decent alternatives to a Chromecast Audio?

      • how's it any better than a chromecast audio actually?

        • +7

It's actually available to purchase. Other than that I don't know.

      • Volumio is good but the (profanity) lock multi-room streaming behind a subscription.

    • And plenty of 2021 4K Apple-TVs on Gumtree at the moment…

      • Yup. If you don’t need anything fancy a raspberry pi is just fine

    No AirPlay?

It looks like a nice device….but a review says it won't cast YouTube Music, which, if true, is a thumbs down for this unit and a + for the CC Audio. This has Optical Audio though, which is pretty cool.

      Chromecast audio does Optical too

      • +1

You can't buy it anywhere though

      • I actually didn't know this. CC audio DOES have optical….you are right, just need to buy the optical lead. Right now on amazon they are $6.98 or something. On special! Thanks for the tip. (I didn't neg you, and I am not sure why I was negged.)

@LenogoThankPad I have a Denon amp with Heos and it doesn't support YouTube Music, absolutely does my head in.

    • Chromecast audio hasn't been available for years.

They may as well be telling people to get a Logitech Squeezebox.

WiiM mini from Amazon is a better option imo. Has airplay 2 and Spotify, tidal connect etc.

My raspberry pi with volumio with hifiberry expansion bitzes all your weak suggestions.

About as easy to get as a chromecast audio these days

      • You don't need a Pi 4 for this purpose. Mine works great on a Pi 3B+.

I have built my own using snapcast (Open Source on github), & raspberry pis with Amps. It streams whatever music is going through my computer to the sync'd multi room clients.

Very nice. just, there is no dedicated hardware for it, which makes it tough for non-technical people.
