Is Driver Education Course Compulsory for Licence Suspension in NSW?

I have the 2nd license suspension in 5 years (Yes my bad, but most are 10km speeding). I got a letter from NSW Transport saying I need to take a Driver Knowledge Test during the suspension period so I can drive again.

I passed the test in NSW Service w/o a doubt, but the staff told me that I must take another online Driver Education Course (provided by 3rd party) to get my license unsuspended. I did a quick search and the cheapest is $175. I doubted the course will help me anything and the course is not even mentioned in the letter they sent me, nor anywhere on the NSW Transport website saying it's compulsory.

I'm wondering if the course is compulsory. And if the course provider would provide the pass information to NSW Transport (since the staff seems doesn't know if I've taken the course or not). Thanks.

    Doesn't this answer your question?

    • Driver Knowledge Test is the same one learners have to do (on computer at Service NSW).

Driver Education Course is completely different and is required for drivers who exceed their demerit points twice in 5 years. I think OP is asking because their letter didn't ask them to do the latter but the staff at Service NSW are saying they need to do the latter.

Says the person who got their licence suspended twice in five years …

    • He needs Bachelor Degree with Masteral in Drivers Knowledge.

You can't change behavior with more information

Well if this isn't the most stupid opinion of the day.

      • Like getting you to stop drinking by providing you with more information.
Most human adults only respond to reward and punishment, then you 'may' see some change.

    …and the cheapest is $175.

That's still cheaper than one of your many <10km/h speeding tickets.lol

    "most are 10km speeding"

I'd only do what the staff at Service NSW said if you wanted your license back.

If you don't care if you get it back or not, this is a great time to plan alternate courses of action. e.g.

    • Say things like "Well, maybe I'll get my license through someone else, you think you're the only entity that can issue driver licenses in this state?".. A bit of negging and playing hard to get and they might come crawling back, yeah?
    • Maybe type "instant driving license course" into Udemy search bar and hit enter. If nothing comes up, give it thirty seconds and try again.
    • Pop down to Subway and order a footlong Chicken Teriyaki sub. Get spanish onion, tomato and spinach leaves on it (but no olives). When they ask what sauce you want, say "I'd like the sauce that allows me to legally drive my car in NSW please".
    • Declare yourself a sovereign citizen and marry your car. Checkmate, 'government'!
  • I doubted the course will help me

    Good attitude…

    • If 2 license suspensions haven't worked, then a safe driving course is gong to have 0 affect.

I think people who have lost their license should go back to a "blue" probationary plate on their car and be subject to doing at least 12 months on this blue P.

      • Nah. Kick em back to red P so they have to start again.

  • Google "Driver Education Course" and read the pages on the www.nsw.gov.au site and you will find the answers to your question IMHO.

I am happy for the 'course' to absolutely useless for the attendee other than being a punishment.

  • Should be

So you're asking us if you can just tell them you did the course without doing it and still get your license back?

Sounds like a couple more months without your license would be good for everyone so sure, why not, go for it.

  • Maybe it's time to start riding a push bike, driving doesn't really seem to suit you.
