Anyone Thinking of Switching to Vanguard Super?

Vanguard have just launched their first superannuation product with the focus on low fees, e.g. 0.58%p.a. on the basic "LifeCycle" fund and other funds where you can invest in other Vanguard products like their ETF's etc.
Still early days and they have some refinements to make, but good to see another low fee provider in the market.

  • Looking into it. It looks like a great alternative to Superhero if wanting to pick and choose your own stock options

Their fees are not that cheap, especially if you have a larger balance. I'm with Hostplus and LIKE that they have a flat fee structure as their admin fee - as seriously it doesn't take more time to do the statements/online etc for someone with $1m in their super than someone with $25k.

The investments themselves are applied a % fee - but they're often a LOT lower than 0.58% - and interestingly the lowest ones are EXACTLY the types of investments folks would be recommended for super i.e index funds.

The govt has a super fee calculator somewhere and I am pretty sure you'll find Vanguard aren't that cheap unless you've very little in your fund.

  • Haven't looked at Vanguard's offerings before, so thanks for that, but I have been considering giving Future Super a crack.

  • Interested in finding out too for the fam, but from the looks of it not that cheaper if you're just going for indexed funds.

  • Looks like a good option for a first super account and then switch it when your balance grows.

  • Anyone had any luck on seeing what their allocations were on their Diversified or Single Sector allocations? Wasn't able to see where the super gets invested.

  • Excuse my ignorance I am a dumb millenial, does this fund mean I can invest my compulsory employer super contributions into shares?!

    • Most super funds will let you invest part of your money into shares. You won't get to pick and choose which particular shares, of course, but you won't be able to do that with Vanguard Super anyway.

A quick look at their offerings on the website shows that they've got the standard "High Growth", "Conservative", "Fixed Interest", "International Shares", "Cash/Hedge", etc options that many other super funds will let you play with too. So you can adjust those overall categories for your super, but Vanguard gets to pick the specific shares/bonds/investments. (Which is fair enough: that's exactly what you're paying them to do with the annual fee.)

    • All super funds are investing your super for you, generally speaking. They normally have different investment options you can pick from. Not all funds allow you to pick the specific shares.
