What's Worth Buying from Costco?

My partner bought a membership recently and we're heading there this arvo to do some shopping. I'm not sure we're likely to save any money over shopping at Coles or Woolies but hopefully there is a bargain or two or some good stuff we can't get elsewhere. Is there anything that you would recommend or anything we should steer clear of? We're a household of 2 humans and a cat.

  • Fuel alone is worth the membership.

After going there for years, have reduced entering the shop. more savings that way.

costco puts you in the buy buy buy mindset with their stock shuffle.

not always the case if you add woolworths discount on fuel (4c) plus gift card discount of another 4% plus another 4c discount from origin energy … costco sometimes costly then woolworths even for fuel… in my opion.

      • +1

Costco fuel is a no-brainer if you live within 10 minutes. havent seen woolies or other fuel stations beat them in my area.

    • 7/11 fuel lock aka choppa

everything in Costco is high price when you add 10% Woolworths discount plus 4% Woolworth gift card discount…. so instead of wasting money in costo better spend on Woolworths in my opinion… ! i am doing it and saving it with Woolworths … (sure i also have costo membership and it is worst spend of the year for me)…. !

  • Am a bit late to this thread so listing for anyone else.

You need to know your prices, quality and be prepared for bulk (freeze it, will you use that much, can you store it). Understand that the trolleys and warehouse nature of costco can make things look smaller that are in reality much bigger. E.g.

Heinz ketchup bottles, 2 for $7.99 doesnt seem great until you realise they're twice the size of the coles and woolies ones that retail $4 each.
If you have a 2nd freezer, great. Buy some mince meat at 3.5kg slabs and freeze it. Don't have a freezer, dont buy it, you probably wont eat 3.5kgs in 1-2 days.
Have a big pantry or under stair storage or similar? Buy some bulky long life items like a 10x pack of devondale milk which is like $1 bottle that i last remember.

Lastly, a handful of $15, $20, $25 and $30 items add up fast, keep count. A full trolley at costco is $500+

Wrong Woolworths also give 1ltr Heinz ketchup for $4 during special and if you use gift card then you get 4% discount and if you have Woolworths insurance then you get another 10% discount so all in all 14% discount on top of

      • +1

get 4% discount and if you have Woolworths insurance then you get another 10% discount so all in all 14% discount on top of

Wouldn't it be 10% discount at the checkout, and then 4% of that via discounted gift card you pre purchased?
        So 13.6% 'all in all'

      • And if you do a handstand followed by a backflip and a woolworths cheer, they give you another 0.5% off… /s

Costco is consistently the same price for heinz ketchup, far better value than waiting around for woolies to have a sale and for 1/2 dozen conditions to line up to beat Costco's price.

  • American cheese.

Also, the warranty. With a few exceptions, they will mostly allow returns for any reason indefinitely. One time at the Docklands store the guy in front of me returned a shirt he had bought at a Costco in California. I was waiting for them to say “nope, can’t do that”. They instead just processed the return as usual and told him they would have to refund him at todays USD/AUD exchange rate.

Also the huge about of international goods which are not readily available in Australia.
Not all about the lowest price (even though a lot of it is), but just stuff you can't get anywhere else.

    • Like what?

  • Costco has the cheapest price for DOP parmigiano reggiano and pecorino romano. I also like Kirkland EVOO and their California grown ground garlic.

  • Fuel.

  • Bulk party food and roast chicken.
