Bikepacking Tyres 29+ High Volume

Hi all,

My bikepacking bike has 29" + size high volume tyres (Surly Krampus). This is fantastic for ride quality however tyre options are quite limited and those available are usually out of stock and very expensive.

So hoping the team here can find me some decent options, thanks in advance! Looking at any options between 2.4"-3" width similar design to the Maxxis Chronicles which have been discontinued :(

  • It’s a bit of an odd size so there won’t be a lot available. Cheap ones probably won’t be good. Searched on a more specific bike forum?

    • Yep I know but sometimes it can work in your favour as a buyer as these specific sizes sit on the shelf for a long time! Guess I should also be trying to check for batch age too considering that don't want 3+ year old rubber

      • I was shocked at how much 26” fat bike tyres cost when I got one. Fortunately I don’t do many kms on my fat bike and also managed to get some barely used second hand for $30 each.

  • Looks like you did not see that a 29+ bike;s were not common when you bought the bike. As such parts will be expensive. Have you looked at alibaba or some other chinese ebay equivalent as they will be cheaper on these sites.

    • I love the 29+ high volume tyres and it was a big draw card for buying this frameset tbh

Prepared to pay $100+ per tyre if I have to but wanted to check with the OzBargain brains trust before pulling the trigger on anything!

Current Schwalbe tyres are ok but sitting on about 50% tread wear.

      • How many km's per year are we talking here?

        • +1

Tyre wear is not like a normal road bike due to rocks, gravel and the jumps and sliding down 50' slopes or the true off track experiences that will occur.

Tyres are used in Joh's going under land.
Comrade 'banese wants you to fit tires?
