Outside Ear Skin Pain from Samsung Ear Buds

Hi Ozb fam,

I am one of the many unlucky people who have had a bad reaction to the Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 and have a very sore ear (I was only using the right bud).

The sore area is right outside the ear canal where the charging connector dots touch the skin. I've tried a couple creams and even some sofradex ear drops but nothing has helped.

I am reluctant to go to a GP as I have a very busy couple weeks, so wanted to check here first whether anyone else has had this issue and what they did to ease or get rid of the pain.

TIA.

Go to a doctor.. last thing you want is you need to go to an ENT

Thing is I've just recently been to an ENT for different issues inside the ear canal. Spent $300+ for a 10 minute session and Medicare only covers some of it. Also been to docs recently for other unrelated issues. Hence the reluctance to have to go again.

Wanted to check with others who may have had the same thing and what they did if there is something I can try with what I have or buy otc before booking in the doc.

If you can't put yourself first , you never will . growing up with chronic ear infections later on in life slowly going deaf (self inflicted , heavy machinery) life has taught me , wearing a hearing aid sucks .

  • Ear infections are on the inside.
    Sound like a skin reaction.
Were the creams for eczema? If not try one of the ones from the chemist that you can get over the counter that do not require a prescription. Show the chemist what you have so they can make sure you are given the right cream.

    • Ok skin infection/reaction..

I tried otocomb otic ointment and daivobet ointment. Will try something for eczema thanks.

You might want to look at whether you have an allergy to Palladium. It affects roughly 1 in 10 people.

    • From what I've read it's a reaction to nickel used in the charging connector dots.

      • I am "allergic" to nickel too - if I wear a belt for more than an hour or two the skin on my midriff gets bumpy, red, inflamed and intensely itchy. Have to put clear nail polish all over the top of the buckle. I can't imagine that happening on your ear skin, that would hurt. Could you buy some removeable stickers to cover the charging dots when you're wearing them?

        • Have returned them for a full refund. Seems a lot of people are doing this. If I have to go to the docs and pay a gap and medicated cream or drops, I will also try claim this back from Samsung. Just ridiculous that they've not thought this through.

  • I had a problem similar to yours with a hearing aid. A bit of the plastic must have been rubbing. It just got sorer and sorer. I fixed the problem by using a bit of corn flour from the kitchen. The craft section of a junk shop have tiny little containers if this works for you. Alternatively a Chapstick ( lip balm) also worked wonders.

In my case it was a bit like breaking in new shoes. After a while of not being rubbed raw the skin must have toughened up and the problem went away.

    • Definitely not just the plastic, it's exactly where the charging dots are. I've returned them for a full refund. Putting corn flour or chapstick on the charging dots would have affected its ability to connect to the case to charge, so not a great idea.

I had the same thing, with the Xiaomi inner ear buds that were all the rage a few years ago. I ended up with an inflamed ear drum and all sorts of discharge from both ear canals. If yours is on the outside of the ear, where you can see it, I think the advice would be "don't use the earbuds anymore, keep your ears clean and dry, and it will go away on its own". In my case, I had to take antibiotic and antifungal ear drops which eventually cleared it up- tried OTC, naturally, but nothing budged it.

Excellent sounding earbuds, but I threw them away and haven't had a problem since. As others have said, just go to a GP.
