How to Decide Best Combination of Reward Points and Pay

Hi all,

I've got about 70,000 odd reward points to use up with a service provider.
There's 2 items I've settled on, but if I just redeem my rewards points I can only get one or the other.
When I start playing with the sliders on each item to make it Points and Pay redemption (so I can split my points between the 2 and pay some additional cash) the total to pay for both items varies.
I'm getting variances from $280 up to $350 after redeeming all points and paying the additional, so fairly substantial for items I don't really need.
Has any smart cookies come up with a calculator or something to work out the best split?
Surely there's an obscure website run by a Financial Coupon Economists somewhere in the world??

Cheers
G

  • Every points provider would have their own algorithm, so there's that. Universal solver:

    1. Mathematically I'd determine if the 'value' of points burnt changes based on volume (if 10,000 points gets you $25 off, does 20,000 points get you $50 off?). Playing with a few settings (increments of 5,000?) you should narrow down where the value shifts (if at all).

    2. Repeat on both items to make sure it's not category specific (assuming items are different categories in the catalogue e.g. wine versus holidays).

    3. Solve for X

  • Cost of original item if you paid cash?
    Market value of the points?
