RM Williams – Pull Tabs and Age of Boot?

Yet another RM Williams thread – but I can’t seem to find anything online about it aside from some an obscure post on styleforum from years back.

I have a pair of black dynamic flex that I got recently for a good price on marketplace, nothing better than a quality pair of already seasoned leather boots for half the price.

So now, I’m on the hunt for a 2nd hand pair either in chestnut or black (again). I came across a few comfort craftsman with yellow text on black pull tabs. The pair I currently have are more recent it seems, matching the ones on the RM Williams website with white text on black pull tabs.

Any long time RM William owners here know any facts behind this change? And if it would help me date the 2nd hand pairs I find on marketplace?

Thanks!

Checked ours. Pair purchased last year (Roo Tan Bark) have brown and white tabs.

Pair purchased maybe 2019/20 (Yearling Chestnut) - brown and white also.

They usually have the month and year of manufacture embossed inside the boots

  • Thanks – so based on my observation.

White text on black with white edges – known to be most current based on website for the black pairs.
White text on brown with white edges - the most common ones I see on people’s feet and seem to be on all the chestnut/brown yearling boots.
Yellow text on black with yellow edges – seems to be the older ones of the lot. And more commonly seen on black pairs, I’m not sure about the older brown ones, I feel they just stuck with brown tabs on those.

Looking on the website, the tab colours aren’t determined by the line of boot but rather the colour of the leather.

    • I got my current pair in 2009 (and the insole is stamped "1/09"), dark tan pair has white text on brown pull-tabs.

I have an old pair of blacks (perhaps purchased in 2014 I think…) with the yellow font. From memory, they changed to black/white maybe a year or two after I puchased. I'd say the black tag has been around for about 5 years (give or take).

They had a very recent limited run of yellow/black tabs I think. They were for the 90th anniversary edition boots.

  • So I bought another black yearling pair today and to my surprise, they turned out to be dynamic flexs as well!

I thought they were comfort craftsman because the pictures I saw of the entire sole were rubber whereas the 2017 H pair I have was rubber and leather.

But the insole was removable and it read dynamic flex in an older design. Under them the production date was 2012. Not much I can find on the history of RM williams and all the changes made over the years but it looks like I got a comfort craftsman on the outer sole and a DFC on the inner sole.
