Update - 22/11/22 - Accepting New Customers | Truphone Not Taking New Customers Apple Watch Cell

Got the Apple Watch SE Cellular for my son and decided to sign up the $10/month Truphone plan.

The website is showing this message -

SORRY, WE'RE TEMPORARILY SERVING EXISTING CUSTOMERS ONLY.
Unfortunately, we won’t be selling mobile data plans to new customers for the time being. However, if you’re one of our existing customers and you’ve already got one of our data plans, you can continue to use it as normal and continue to add top-ups via your account portal, auto-renewal options, or via an email request to our customer service team. We’re working hard to restore full service as soon as possible.

What are my options to tackle this challenge? I want my son to be able to message us (if not call) during school pick up times. He doesn’t have a mobile phone and I would like to set up the Watch as a family set up.

  • What telco are you with? MIght be easier just to to the watch add-on to your account? Not sure if only Telstra Optus and Vodafone offering this though.

    • I am with Optus but my current plan doesn’t offer a $5 add on.

Also I prefer son’s watch to be stand alone so that he can receive his call and message.

Wouldn’t want all calls to go to him. I guess this will happen if I add his watch as an add on. Note, I have an Apple Watch too but that’s just GPS.

Find another $10/month Apple Watch SIM plan?

A quick google search doesn’t show any :(

Not surprised they're cutting back business (Russian owned company)

If he doesn't have a phone will the battery last all day on his watch? I remember when mine flipped over to cellular it would lose battery super quick!

    • Tbh, I have no idea. Maybe yes. The reason I say that is - during school holidays, the watch will show only a watch face due to family set up school time feature. For example between - 8:30am to 3:30pm.

Oh yes that will help, plus you can turn off the always-on display if you have it

Thanks for posting this. Was about to buy two Apple watches for my kids for Xmas but now sounds like they won’t work for what I need.

Have you spoken with Apple customer service?

    • Not yet but I doubt they can help in anyway as they don’t provide the service, just a product.

Yup, not worth getting the watch as the cellular option won’t work and it beats the purpose of getting one and doing the family set up as it won’t work without a phone.

Chatted with apple customer care. Can confirm they struggled to even understand the issue. Clearly an overseas contact centre, poor English, seemingly not empowered to do anything other than deliver from script. Complete waste of time, was suggested I ‘hope’ for a resolution.

Thanks for trying. I am going to keep looking for a solution and share with this group.

It just sucks that as a customer, we don’t have any options. At all.

          • @BuddhaBoy: Thanks a lot. I’ll keep trying too. Apple are a massive company and are advertising a feature that isn’t available. I just don’t have any idea how to raise it with people that matter. I’m sure they just aren’t aware.

This sucks. Just got an Apple Watch for my grandma for fall detection, etc. She doesn't use a phone but uses an iPad to communicate with people so would require Family Setup for the watch and now the only option for it is unavailable :/

I hate how cellular service options on Apple Watch is so deliberately gimped. Only one provider for Family Setup and if you set it up paired to a phone there's no option but to share the phone number the iPhone has. It has an eSIM, it would just allow you to set that up with any plan you want, but no, I guess the telcos here can't allow that.

On another note, I searched around and one site says new plan signups are paused until 31 Jan 2023, so guess we can try again in a few months?

I am flabbergasted that there is no competitor in this space. Feels weird, disappointed.

Yeah, at this stage no option and will just have to wait until they (TruPhone) start taking new customers.

Just had confirmation from Truphone customer service that the chances are slim anything will be resolved pre Xmas.

I dunno what a plan B can be. I cannot see a single other option for Apple Watch to work with family plan and I can’t see any android watch alternative. Shitballs.

Hey bud, good news. TruPhone has started taking customers today.

I just signed for an account for son’s Apple Watch. Super easy.

Heads up that if you go to the Truphone plans page and select a plan, you're now directed to a sign in page rather than the message saying they're not taking new customers.

Not certain if this means they're taking customers again though, I just returned the Apple Watch on the weekend.

    • Hi, yes, looks like they were testing the page. They have started accepting new customers today.

  • Update -

Hi guys, Truphone is taking customers again!

If you plan to set up an Apple Watch for family or kids, I suggest you sign up asap.

I signed up and it activated mobile data for my son’s Apple Watch. The process was super smooth!

    Cheers!

  • Recently bought an Apple Watch S8 cellular and signed up a family sharing plan with Truphone. But I cannot add any credit/debit card for Apple Pay through Wallet. The option is not available. Anyone experiencing the same issue? Any idea how to fix? Does Truphone plan work with Apple Pay?

    • It would need to pair with an iPhone set up for Apple Pay.
