Phone Sent with Australia Post Returned: Refused by Customs - Dangerous Goods

Hi all,

I recently sent a few phones overseas with Australia Post - I've done this before and never had an issue until today, when I received a notification that the phone I was sending to Qatar was "refused by customs - dangerous goods".

Anyone have any ideas why this has happened?
Do Qatar have stricter rules?

Thanks so much in advance…

Did you factory reset them… maybe your browser history was flagged under inherent vice provisions.

    • Uh they were brand new units lol

Likely to be due to Lithium batteries. Most couriers will want this to be disclosed and in some cases they're not allowed to be transported via air unless it's commercial.

Yeah you need to put UN3481/0 sticker on the package

  • Do Qatar have stricter rules?

Customs authorities in Middle Eastern countries don't really have any written-down "rules" & can seize anything whenever they want.

Anyway, if you're looking for specific information about what things the Qatari authorities will generally allow through & which ones they will always seize, then you could try asking in some forum for expats to the Middle East, such as this one:

    • Also do Australia post check the rules of the destination or just the export rules of Australia?

In any case, this doesn't look like it's import/export rules, just standard dangerous goods shipping requirements not being met.
