Loading 28 Degrees Credit Card into Credit

I have a small $4k credit limit on my 28 Degrees Mastercard and I am going for an overseas holiday early next year. I have requested for an increase in credit limit a few months ago and now they won't increase it anymore.

I wonder if I can load money into the card like a pre-paid card. So if I load $4k before I go overseas, does it mean I can have $8k to spend?

Yes you can. However you can only do bpay for this and it will cost you 95c if you don't mind

Bpay right? on 14 Oct, my closing balance is x amount, and on 18 Oct I bpay-ed more than twice the amount - thus yes you can. 28 Degrees doesn't have control on the amount you pay with bpay - different with if you pay with their preferred free bank transfer payment method - on their Latitude, which they only allow you to pay up to the balance.

  • I thought you should be able to may early repayments as you spend them? eg. when you have spent 2-3k on your card, you can pay it off early to reduce your credit balance. The downside is that your early payment make take a day or two to clear. I do that with my other cards, sometimes I hit my credit card limit before the month is up. Oops.

    • This way always and will works. And free. But yeah you need internet access and maybe sms 2fa to transfer while on holiday

  • I can't speak for 28 Degrees but have done this with several other cards regularly.

  • Get a revolt debit card or another

You could also just sign up with Up or other bank that will give you a debit card and use that maybe… Up have up to $8 or $9 for new referrals as well at the moment https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/734608. Plus that way you can just transfer smaller amounts onto that card in case your card is lost/stolen or skimmed overseas you won't have all the 4k sitting there to go missing

  • Thanks for all your replies. In my Latitude app I can "make a payment" so can transfer as much money as I want from my savings account to 28 Degrees. Will also apply for an Up card too.

You can but you can't draw out the cash without a cash advance fee.

    • ah maybe thats what i was thinking of -

i seem to remember a few years ago there was a big discussion about not being able to top up - but i think it must have been cant top up and withdraw from atm.
These days though yeah as someone else pointed out just use UP bank or similar, I would argue its way safer anyway since its not a CC.

In the old days (2005? 2012?) I ran a positive balance on 28 degrees and withdrew cash fee free from ATMs overseas.
This stopped a long time ago.
I use Citibank debit card now.
28 degrees is still useful for overseas transactions and I use it when travelling.
I tend to just use banking apps to transfer money to the card along the way, maybe $1000 at a time so I don’t hit credit limits, but also don’t have hassles.

  • I'd be careful doing this as if something happens to your $4k it may not be protected - that's what 28 degrees told me when I tried to do this. I'd rather just use UP

  • Just FYI - I have a card balance of $640 and I tried to clear the balance by transferring-in $1000 and that failed. $900 also failed but it accepted $800.
