I saw bunnings selling thing like "kill the weed and feed the grass"

If no time to pull, do a quick one for those weeds that looks like flowering.

If it is plastered with weeds and you can barely see the lawn use it otherwise its on your hands and knees and pull them out one by one.
Do a section at a time. Great fun get the whole family involved It gets done much quicker.
Who you trying to kid? Good luck doing it by yourself.

Most lawn weed killers kill the existing weeds, so the only way to get on top the the weeds is to kill them before they start to seed. Some weeds will still grow from seeds that look like they have not fully developed, so you need to kill or remove the weeds before they start to flower or grow seeds.

You will need to kill the weeds every month or two over the next 4 months to ensure that the weeds are all killed.

You need to also stop the weeds from blowing in from the street or next door if they have an infestation otherwise they will keep coming back.
If you get the lawn mowed by a mowing company then there will bee weed seeds on the mower and there is not allot you can do about this.

  • I would be careful with weed and feed - for some lawn types it can kill the grass as well. I personally had some decent grass which we used it on, and it was never the same.

    • I do my grass about 3 times a season starting beginning of spring, about 4 weeks later and then end of spring.
Use Yates 500ml Bindii And Clover Lawn Weedkiller Concentrate at $11 a container it's enough to last years.
I have a battery operated sprayer( cheap ryobi) but use to use a hand pumped sprayer for years. I also spray all my neighbours front yards then I don't have to worry about their weeds seeding and blowing into my yard.
My front yard is Kikuyu but my back is buffalo.
My front gets a big spray but my back I tend to concentrate on the weeded areas.
Neighbours always comment on how I have no weeds or very few. They also comment on how many their backyards have.
Usually feed my grass when we get a big rain in December.
Only mow twice in winter, but every 4 days in summer.

      • I also spray all my neighbours front yards

That sounds like they are not aware that you spray their front yards. It also sounds illegal. The herbicide you are using (Dicamba) would also kill or seriously injure buffalo grass, for example.

        • Neighbours thank me , my buffalo survives just fine. Mostly target the penny weed and bits of clover. Don't use as much on buffalo.
Used to buy the much more expensive buffalo specific weed killer , but found it didn't kill the weeds either.

  • Bees need weeds!

If you don't have budget restrictions, go for one of the these…

Hopefully they'll have a good deal for Black Friday.

Feed and weed is very poor economy. It's very diluted herbicide and fertiliser.

What type of grass do you have? What weeds are you trying to manage?

Get a broadleaf herbicide like Bin-Die or Bow and Arrow, and a good sprayer. I use a 13L trolley sprayer. That should kill most weeds except grass type weeds like nut grass or winter grass.

To stop these weeds coming back with a vengeance every year, invest in a pre-emergent herbicide, like Spartan, Barricade or Embargo.
These are sprayed on, last 3 to 4 months and kills any seeds on the soil surface that are germinating. A bottle costs $120, but can last more than a year on a 150sqm lawn. Makes a huge difference the following season and saved heaps of time and money compared to constantly spraying broadleaf herbicides.

    • Can you say if this approach also work in a garden bed? We're noticing lots of weeds appearing in our garden beds, so we were thinking about mulch and weed mat.

      • Mulch and selective weeding for garden beds.

      • Big no to weed mat!

Can still get really big weeds through it and the mat makes it even harder to get rid of them.

Lots of layers of newspaper first will work much better.

    • I second this. Herbicides work, but many of them sold at Bunnings are overly diluted because the average consumer can't apply the right dosage.

A bottle of Spartan (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/125000641235) is suficient for 1,666 square metres (or 16 bi-yearly treatments for 100 sqm) and it prevents weeds from coming back.

      • That is a very expensive way to go

You are better off going to a agriculture place that farmers use. You can buy it in 5 to 1000 liters at a time and at a fraction of the price of bunnings.

  • Be very careful if your lawn is Buffalo.

Herbicide does not generally work. What I find best is to dump hot water on the weeds and let the grass regrow around it. Usually, if you use herbicides you end up killing the grass anyway…

    • best is to dump hot water on the weeds

      Steam works even better.

    • Herbicides definitely work, and they won't kill the grass if applied correctly. I wouldn't use them in my veggie patch, but for the lawn it's very convenient.

    Dicamba M

    • I use this on my couch and it is one of the cheapest herbicides available.

However, it will kill or damage buffalo lawns and even on couch, cause some yellowing.
I also found it less effective on creeping Oxalis as it kills the above ground bits very quickly, probably too quickly, before the poison can reach the underground runners.

      • ive seen bindies turn black with this. I don't know what i did wrong last time but my grass went brown. hopefully comes back.

If it's in a big clump, this (and imitations) might help: https://www.fiskars.com/en-us/gardening-and-yard-care/produc…

    • This is the best thing. I did my lawn with it a year ago when we moved in, and staying pretty vigilant, its almost completely clear of weeds, whereas when we started - it was infested. Pulling them out also aerates your lawn a bit too - which allows thick grass to grow in. I found once the grass filled in, its much harder for weeds to take hold.

Also look at 'Bin-die' or something similar as a spray. We have some weedy runners that this selective poison did well on our yard. Not sure what type of grass you have, but I'd chase down a selective weed spray once you've done an initial cull with a fiskars.

    40m2 of fresh concrete :)

    • Coming from someone like you! :)

Veg patch better - at least you can eat healthily and cheaply. Just put layers and layers of mulch over it.

Why kill them? Just make sure the right weed is growing!

  • There are pre emergents you can apply before winter and during winter to reduce the amount of weeds. Barricade is one I know of.

Ive found that the more often you mow the less chance weeds get to appear.

  • Just leave the weeds.
