Another Car Crash - Process of Getting Repaired?

Hi folks,

Wife scraped corner of front bumper against the garage wall, some paint came off, no damage to headlight and I can see a few broken clips. I am trying to understand what's your process of getting repaired?

1) Head to local smash and repair shop to get a quote?
2) Claim insurance ($600 excess) and let them do the work?

I am tempted to go for option 1 as I think this shouldn't be an expensive job (but I could be wrong), my question is if I were to walk into a smash and repair shop the 1st question they will probably ask is if I have car insurance, if they know that this is an insurance repair will they start jacking up the price? An insurance claim will also affect next year's premium when it comes to renewal. Or should I be better of just get a quote telling them I don't have car insurance and just pay out of pocket?

TIA.

I wouldn't go through insurance for this.

Making a claim will probably cost you more in the long run.

$50 on ebay and you could probably fix this yourself…

  • if they know that this is an insurance repair will they start jacking up the price?

Doubt it. If you go through insurance they know they are unlikely to get the job.

    • And if it was an insurance job, then it makes no difference to OP since s/he pays the excess only.

    • It’s not so much they jack up the price, it’s that they budget to do the job completely. Cash they might offer a cheaper alternative like not removing the bumper or not spraying the whole thing.

OP: Hi, can I get a quote?

    PB: private or through insurance?

    Pretty simple.

  • Photos and what car?

    • Just the ozbargain standard issue camry, I will take some photos.

      • It's cracked?

That's not a simple scratch. Your wife should have stopped on first impact and not dragged the rest of the bumper across the wall. I'm guessing $1500 repair bill at least.

        • …should have stopped on first impact and not dragged the rest of the bumper across the wall

I don't get why so many people do this! It's like their brain shuts off on impact and they just keep goooooooing….

      • SHESH!

Option 3: DIY repair. Sand it back to smooth, paint with colour matched paint.

Option 4: purchase wrecker bumper in same colour and install.

    • Option 4 would be my preference
      .

    • Yep, by far the best two options. On a small job like this the panel beater will tell you they need to spray the whole bumper and blend onto the front quarter otherwise it's not worth their time. Who knows how long they will want the car for as well. Should be able to pick up another bumper and knock out the job in an afternoon even with no experience.
