Surprise Surprise: New Laptop upon Inspection Found Used

So, I had bought a new laptop on "clearance" section online from a well known tech brand.

I just reached home and "Surprise" the laptop arrived well before due date. That was peak happiness then it all started plateauing from there.

The box was a little old, so I guessed it was in the warehouse for longer than usual.

Second bummer, I checked the seal was suspiciously non-sticky. "Surprise"

The laptop looks ok, but it did not feel like a new one.

I just run the battery inspection tool and holy moly, the laptop has been used since 2020 (maybe as a display unit) for 300 hours at times (and 1000s of hours in total) and the battery has depleted by almost 20 percent. "Surprise Surprise Surprise"

The advertisement said nothing about 'Display unit', so are they allowed to do this on clearance items? Please advise.

Thank you.

What did the shop say when you told them about it?

    • -6

I was delivered the laptop like half an hour ago. I have not told anything yet, too stunned, as of now

And first thought was to post on here, not to call/email them?

        Right…

As a 10 year OzB veteran, surely you know this is the only reasonable option..

also, the shop closes at 5:30 pm, duh!

        • First post from "new" laptop.

Don’t forget to start a poll, should I:
          1. Send a keyboard warrior email
          2. Call them for help whilst sounding polite but super mad inside
          3. Post it on their Facebook and demand CoMpEnSaTiOnZ

It's not new, it's used. I would ask for a replacement new one, a refund, or a considerable discount as a partial refund

You know you can return it right. Surprise?

    • lol, ofc I'll return it but I was too excited for this since a long time. Appreciate the kind input, friend :)

    • They may ask you to pay the return postage though unless OP paid via PayPal.

Did it actually say it was "new", or did you assume that's what everything in the clearance section would be?

Deciding whether the description of it was honest or deceptive requires knowing how it was described. And how much off the price was.

In any case, a "well known tech brand" would most likely accept it back if you feel it wasn't honestly described.

      that's the plan, thanks bud

I’m bloody outraged on your behalf op.
    That’s crazy.
    Unbelievable.

I suggest you take this all the way to the Prime Minister.

    • the call for PM is on 'HOLD', should get through by next year, lol

  • Clearance can be new, damaged box, used, demo or scratch and dent model.

Did the page you bought it from say it was "new" or just clearance as there is a HUGE difference?

  • -1

    Must of been cheap

  • Which battery inspection tool did you use? Sounds like something everyone should use it when buying a laptop.

  • Harvey Norman? Happened with them before

  • Does the keyboard have any oil marks or shiny keys
