In Wellington, Weta and Te Papa would be my go to's with kids.
Not sure if it is too far, but Hobbiton is brilliant. The best place in NZ. The Waitomo glow worm caves are great too.
Do a tour of Weta studios - it where they made most of the props for the Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit and other movies.

Wow. I totally had the wrong idea here.
But taking the cable car (one-way) and wandering back down through the botanic gardens is kid friendly and affordable.
