Process for New Car Delivery

I ordered a new car and It’s arriving next week.

This is my first car purchase, so Im new to the delivery process.

I was informed by my dealer to make the full payment (less any deposit) prior to the pick up date.

Is this the normal process? What if I inspect the car on the pick up date and there was a visible issue with the car but I have already made the full payment.

Or do I ask for a day to inspect first then arrange another day to pick up (along with full payment)?

Anything i need to look out for in particular during the delivery process?

Thanks all!

Completely normal, unless you want to go in there with a bank cheque on delivery, but either way that's already been paid for

I'm sure you're not going to a small dealer, there's nothing to worry about with the new car. Do a lap around it to make sure there's no scratches, make sure your accessories are fitted, and sign the docs and drive out the door

    R U Insured?

A million times this. Organise your comprehensive insurance before you start driving off in it.

    Pretty normal.

What if I inspect the car on the pick up date and there was a visible issue with the car but I have already made the full payment.

Then you notify them that it is not of acceptable quality and you refuse to take delivery until issues are resolved OR you take the car with a "WRITTEN AGREEMENT" that these issues will be resolved by XX date or on the first service. DO NOT sign any paperwork for final delivery until you have something in writing that they will make good on their end of the deal.

do I ask for a day to inspect first then arrange another day to pick up

    This is also an option.

Make sure the paperwork matches up. VIN is correct and matches the contract. Make sure it is the model you purchased (it's the XLS-R and not just an ES-T) and check for features that were advertised (Safety items like adaptive radar cruise/lane keep assist or heated/cooled butt dyno coupling) and that anything on the contract that was mentioned is carried though (mats, tinting, tow bar, sunroof, etc…)

If something is missing, wrong or defective and they say they will "fix it" get it IN WRITING and signed by the sales manager. Stealerships have a habit of saying "yeah, we would not have promised that." when you go back to have it rectified.

Also, have your insurance sorted to start the day you take the vehicle. In my years working at stealerships, you would be amazed at the amount of people who stacked their car in the driveway or just after leaving the stealers lot.

  • With 90,000 new cars delivered every month in Australia, why has this question never been asked before?

Because OzBargainers will only purchase a used Camry when in need of a car. The new car experience isn't very bargain-ish.

  • Or do I ask for a day to inspect first then arrange another day to pick up (along with full payment)?

You can probably do this, but run the risk of having it damaged between inspection and pickup. Unlikely, but it’s possible.

Ensure anything that was promised during the sale but is not provided at the time of delivery is written on the delivery note with the stamp of the dealership and signature of the salesman! Or else, once you drive away with the car anything that was not provided will never be provided!

    • More like check the standard items and optional items promised includes in the car, as I had to ask for the refund day before the delivery date lol

  • Get a bull bar

    • Do they make bull bars for MG3?

      • They need them lol

  • Make sure you have a valid driver's licence.
Check the car for scratches and dents before you sign for it.
    Insurance is a good idea.

    Good luck.

    • Insurance is more than a good idea, it’s ESSENTIAL!
