Weird Depression on the Negative Terminals of Activ Energy Rechargeable Battery

I have been looking at some of my rechargeables lately and have noticed something odd with the aldi range of activ energy batteries.

It seems like on the negative terminal there seems to be some type of depression, almost like the battery has caved into itself.

Is it still safe to use or should I be throwing these out?

  • does it work?

    i'm guessing it helps:
    - the positive terminal of another battery stay in place when connected in series.
    - the spring stay in place with the battery in a remote

sounds like a good idea to me

    • The batteries still work. I have tried placing them inside my torch that uses 3 batteries. The problem is that it does not make contact and I need to shake it a bit for it to turn on. It does work slightly if I put two of the dented ones and a flat eneloop, but still requires a bit of fidgeting with the spring to make sure it contacts. There is a lot of slack so I doubt there is pressure coming from those springs. I am also not comfortable with mixing and matching batteries though as they might reverse polarity if I recall. Does that even affect rechargeables though? I really do not know.

I do not have a clear idea about what is causing it to happen as I could understand if a spring was pushing against it and causing the battery to become dented. One of the products I am putting it into must be pushing against it, but I do not know which one and yet it does not appear to affect the other brands of batteries which have been rotated around randomly through all the clocks and other devices.

Oh, I do know the batteries get hot when used in the torch. Could it just be this? My thoughts are that it is something to do with this and that it is somehow melting the casing? It only affects this gray aldi battery. The silver one seems fine, along with the eneloops, ladda and varta batteries. I have a bunch of other random rechargeable too. I definitely run through many charges on this torch, so all the batteries get a good workout.

If they are all like that, its probably just how they got manufactured.

    • Yeah, I think that is correct.

It does not affect my Eneloops or Duraloops. I have used the batteries in the same devices and I rotate the batteries regularly.
