  • Just what I needed, thanks

8 outlets = 8 times the explosive power

  • +3

Mine arrived today. Its a great powerboard.
Using it for my christmas lights

    • +73

Don't mean to be cruel mate, but that one red light that glows on the powerboard - easily the shittiest Christmas light display I have EVER seen.

      • +2

        Ha ha

      • +4

        Hahaha nicely played

      • +8

I think he's talking about the light of the fire when the board inevitably catches explodes

  • +3

Thanks OP - ordered the next model up for stronger USB output

  • +8

Thanks op - using it as a fireworks display

    • The reviews are decent, unsure where the basis of risk is coming from. Is this brand unreliable? It seems to be working fine for me

      • +3

        You must be new here

        • +2

I'm new here. What's the story?

        • +2

I just read previous posts. Mainly seems to be issue with phone chargers. No one has complained about the board.
In saying that i note Toobs comment below.
Cant think of the risk my low voltage lights would cause but good to know.

  • Thanks

I'll be honest I always thought you guys were exagerating about these Heymix products, that is until I pulled one apart.

The "circuit breaker" is just a switch, the "surge protection" is just an LED running from the switched to the unswitched side of the "switch" there are no MOVs from what I can see, however, I didn't bother disassembling the USB section which is only connected to the mains side by wires the size of breadboard jumpers, there may be MOVs in there but considering the wire size and considering that section is only connected to active and neutral it won't provide much in the way of surge protection even if it were a 5x5cm block of MOVs.

Also the USB side doesn't appear to have any cooling apart from the copper tracks on the PCB and some thermal pads which appear to really only provide some thermal protection to the housing.

Ooh and the reason I disassembled it in the first place, they miswired the active and neutral, there were five of these boards all about to be tagged new to service but since I had the PAT out for some custom length power leads I figured I'd give them a run through, all were miswired, they were purchased at different times and were a mix of 45w, 65w and 120w models.

The active and neutral wires were transposed, I pulled the first (120w) one open to investigate and consider fixing it up to take home but upon opening it noped the f out…

This is a great write up and thank you because I was about to consider buying one.. Nope!

    • +4

which powerboard brand do you recommend sir ?

      • +1

        ^ following for this answer.

      • +7

Just go Belkin, decent build quality, connected equipment warranty, available everywhere.
Really, if you're plugging expensive computer hardware or AV equipment into the thing you don't want to go tight on the powerboard and suffer RFI, dodgy connections, transposed active and neutral or worse.

      • +1

Cyberpower is probably your best budget option.

        https://www.pcbyte.com.au/p/cyberpower-home-theater-8-outlet…

Normally can be had for cheaper I'd say it's decent for $30

Belkin was a real pain in the ass for RMA.

Would expect more when paying $80 for a power board.

        • I have one of those CyberPower boards - it makes crackling noises when plugging stuff in and when the cables plugged into it move around a bit. I remember seeing similar comments from others on this board and some comments saying their boards are fine, might be a lucky dip as to which version arrives in the mail.

          • @Kermitall: Funny you say that. I have a Cyberpower UPS and plugged stuff into the surge protected/non battery backup outlets and they keep arcing and disconnecting. Couldn't get a stable connection. Battery backed sockets seem to be ok though.

    • +3

The active and neutral wires were transposed, I pulled the first (120w) one open to investigate and consider fixing it up to take home but upon opening it noped the f out…

How in the FLYING F do these lying scumbag MOFOs get their SAA certification for sale in the AU market?
The sheer number of folks who do not know about OzBargain or will probably never come across your comment being deceived every single day… completely outrages me.

      • +2

How in the FLYING F do these lying scumbag MOFOs get their SAA certification for sale in the AU market?

They're reusing the same SAA certificate numbers for all their products.

        • +5

Yeah I'd love to see that test report, even if they are using the same report, if they had tested anything remotely resembling this board I pulled apart there's no way it could have passed.

I'd also like to know who the importer is, they deserve to be shot!!

      • +3

Thats why there is so much hate for this brand.

        Avoid at all costs !!

    • +10

Genuinely frightening to read this. I don't know much about electrical things but this this doesn't sound good. I've got 3 of these scattered around the house and kids playing right next to them. I'll have to resolve that, they can't coexist. Shame as I really love my kids, I'm going to miss them - can't let go of the powerboards cumulatively they were so pricey. In all seriousness, I'd going to listen to people that know more than me and get rid of these at once - I'm also sticking around for an answer below as to what we should in fact be buying. Cheers and thanks for your efforts. Really appreciate it. Very well may be genuinely saving lives.

      • +2

I think getting rid of kids is a bit of an ordeal (legally) unless you're proven to be a negligent parent.

Maybe letting DOCS know you've filled your house with HEYMIX powerboards might speed along the process?

        • +2

No doubt. I still can't really understand what has happened. I mean ozbargain has Heymix deals SO OFTEN. I also thought the random comments were memes that started somehow in fun. It's become clear these are terrible terrible powerboards. Must be a way for us to get mods on board - If these are dangerous, certainly sound like they are - we shouldn't continue to see deals, surely that's the least we can do - feels like it's creeping into that zone where we could potentially be avoiding a 6pm news story of another unexplained fire in a family home. There has to be a ton of good product options.

          • +1

@seamonkey: I'm more interested in why these Heymix products seem to sell so many units in qty but have so few reviews, are they doing something to motivate people/Amazon to remove negative reviews, are they changing ASIN with each shipment?
What's the deal… surely a product that's almost always the top of the powerboard category should have more reviews than they have!

            • +4

@ToobsAU: From looking through the reviews on other deals:

              • Australians don't seem to review as much
              • There are a lot of reviewers that appear to be dodgy
              • Heymix products are sold by about 5 or 6 different sellers
              • There are often listings for each colour, different quantities etc
              • There are many similar models
              • According to one poster they were offered a refund on the condition they removed their review
              • One listing on a previous deal was removed after another Ozbargainer left the first negative review
            • +2

@ToobsAU: Great point. I usually consider myself pretty aware, I got sucked in through just visabilty on ozbargain. "Oh man, they are posted all the time here, ozbargainers seem to love them, they must be good!" Add to cart. Your point is very solid.

      • +1

I asked a similar question in a previous thread and got a reply from someone who seems to know a bit about powerboards:

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/12257380/redir

        • Cheers. I'll take a look now. Appreciate it.

    • Okay sweet, Ill cancel my order. Agreed that I too would like a quality board and want advice. I want one that is black, has at least 6 plugs, and ideally at least one USB capable of 45W

    • +8

This comment is well worth a read before considering purchase. Neg for attention.

    • Thanks for the write up 👍, I always see heymix deals and was thinking to buy something from them, but not anymore.

If I were I mod I wouldn't allow any posts about heymix products, clearly it's a dangerous product. Maybe they waiting for a tragedy to happen, I wouldn't be able to sleep at night knowing something bad might happen

    • +4

This comment should be posted to every Heymix deal

    • If you bought it from Amazon did you leave a review?

    • +2

I was feeling tingles from cables connected to my Heymix USB charger:

      https://amzn.asia/d/bFkTxXX

I measured 120 Vac on the ground of the USB cable.

Very dangerous - would not recommend Heymix!

      • +1

Ouch, often cat 2 devices, particularly power supplies will have a certain float voltage on the ground side but they should never have sufficient float to give you a tingle

        • I'm not quite sure why I was getting 120 Vac, and not the full 240 Vac.

I measurement a few other USB chargers for comparison, and I would get a couple of volts, nothing concerning.

Here is a photo of the measurement:

          https://imgur.com/a/NUQQjg0

    • Thanks for sharing that info. Dangerous products indeed!

    • -1

Thanks for the comment. (neg for attention)

  • +1

Better to get this one as u ger usb C charging port …
I have been using this and its very good , at this stage is 52$ which is decent… I bought for 60$

    https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B09P65NJ9F/ref=emc_b_5_t

    • I wont use the high output usb ports this is to power my tv entertainment.

      • For sure, why take the risk of added RFI from a cheap power supply, do your charging elsewhere.

      • At that point why not buy a better 8 port board that actually has protections, and in some cases insurance for damages if they fail (belkin) for cheaper?

        • Yer im going to get belkin.

  • +2

Some of the higher usb wattage boards have disturbing amazon reviews, like usb ports not working at all on arrival or electricity arcing, seems dangerous.

  • -1

91 ratings, not one complaint of poor quality, 4.6 stars.

    • How many people open up power boards and inspect them or perform additional testing on them?

The main reason this would get bad ratings is issues with USB charging.

      • +2

You raise a good point, if it weren't for the transposed active and neutral I wouldn't have opened it up thinking I could score a free 120w power supply/board by swapping two wires.
If I get bored over the weekend I might do a tear down and take some pics for you all…
Should send one to big Clive too, would love to hear his review in his dry Scottish accent!

  • +8

If Heymix are genuinely unsafe, they should be banned on OzBargain.

  • +2

I think im going to get belkin 8 port for $39 from good guys commercial.

    • Good plan, I figure if you want USB ports most likely they'll be used for powering ancillary devices related to the application, e.g. I've got some from a Belkin board powering a rpi and a ZigBee hub.
And if I wanted to use the USB ports on my home office desk to charge my phone for example I probably wouldn't care too much about charging speed as I'd be sitting there all day anyway.

      • More because im using it for my tv and gaming consoles i want a strong connection when pluging into powerpoints.

    • Thank you i also bought this now as well and have processed a refund and return via amazon. I love my family too much to risk it.
I really owe it to all of you for alerting us of the issues :) thanks everyone

  • +3

    Ban this clown company.

  • +1

I purchased the HEYMIX Powerboard USB C 120W board. It started hissing at us when we turned it on with only a fan plugged in. Have not been game to use it since since don't fancy burning the place down.

    • Good thing Amazon is great with returns.

  • +4

Please please don’t buy these if you value your safety and or any devices you plug in, particularly the usb ports.

    There are reports that include

    • The company buying reviews
    • The company offering conditional refunds upon removal of reviews
    • Reising certification to get out of having there devices tested

    • improper grounding

    • live and neutral literally being switched in some units
    • usb chargers damaging devices permanently and irreversibly
    • people getting zaps and shocks from devices plugged in
    • no real surge protection or industry standard safety mechanisms inside

The list goes on longer, these are all the things i remember off the top of my head, please don’t buy these, and if you have any consider returning them because even if yours work fine some of these issues reported aren’t just a matter of WHEN you’ll have issues.

  • +2

I bought this exact unit, tested it and found that live and neutral wires are transposed. I returned it today.

  • +1

I'd suggest that rather than people just sniggering amongst themselves in the comments, they go out and leave reviews where the general public can read (not everyone is on OzBargain and is up to date with memes more recent than our Broden). I left a negative review to help others on Amazon, how about more people do the same and add some proper value to the world?

  • +1

Back on for amazon boxing day sale

  • Bought a heymix, going to plug my GPO/RCD tester into and hopefully live/neutral are transposed so I can post review on Amazon.
