Blown My Shoulder - Need MRI + Physio in Sydney

Hi all,

I am PR in Australia but live in UK most of the year. I have to come back to Australia next week, and due to Murphy's laws I had a bad bike accident this Sunday. Long story short, my right shoulder probably dislocated for a few instants and tendons inside squashed. This is a partial guess as In A&E I was only able to obtain X rays from which it appears no bone is broken. As probably many of us know well, the situation of UK health system is such that it is almost impossible to get additional diagnostics. Hence, I have no ultrasound analysis to assess the status of my ligaments.

As I have to go back to Sydney next week, I wish to do an MRI and have a good visit with a physio, possibly combining the two for time-effectiveness. Even though I am prepared to spend, I am money-wise and would welcome recommendations in this dimension from the community.

thanks all!

There is no point in getting the mri and going to a physio at the same time, without the mri being assessed you might do more harm to your shoulder.

get the mri, goto a specialist first, then see if you require surgery first before physio, or physio will be enough to fix the issue for you.

There is steps involved, follow the steps or it could end up being much worse and the cause is your stupidity or carelessness.

Surgeon'ss biases are for generally performing surgery, OP may be able to get by trying conservative care. In saying that you need to see your GP for an MRI, physios can request MR imaging to but it's my understanding that going through GP may not cost you anything.

In my experience, GPs refer to pretty average physios so I would probably look for a physio specialising in shoulder injuries and is evidence based.

  • Indeed, there is a sequence (and possibly a time gap) between the two that has to be complied with. Can you recommend an MRI service I can use?

See a GP and get a referral. When I broke my wrist the GP gave me a referral and made the appointment at the hospital for me, few days later I turned up and got the MRI, cost me nothing.

As someone who has blown both shoulders (and other bits) over the years I would recommend that surgery be your last resort. Go and see a good physio first and they will assess whether you need an MRI and where to go from there. Give yourself plenty of time to heal, months or longer by the sound of it. Your physio should give you the right exercises to do and as long as you do them you should come good in turn. I have heard a couple of long term succes stories from people who went the surgery route..but not many. GL

Or a competent sports chiro 😝. Shameless plug but I know how the ozbargain community views chiros but there are those that are evidence based get great results.

hah, yeah I was going to suggest good osteo but then changed my mind for the same reasons. My osteo has done wonders over the years for shoulders, knees and back injuries. My chiro is mostly for general checkups rather than specific injuries but I guess each one could have a different speciality background. Referrals are king.

  • Let's assume a very typical scenario: after a plea and begging I manage to get the GP willing to refer me to a shoulder specialist. Any recommendation? Unfortunately I have to plan everything in advance because this time my window is tight (3/12 - 24/12) and I would like to at least know what is going on here….

  • Hi all,

an update: apparently I broke a shoulder labrum and a surgery for stabilization is recommended. We are looking at an intervention in the range of 8k-15k. At the moment, I am not covered by an insurance (foolish of me) and my medical record simply indicates a past dislocated shoulder. Is there a way to join an insurance plan and have the intervention done in a year offsetting at least 50% of the cost?

    Anybody in a similar experience?
