Australia Post Basic Postage Rate (BPR) Increase - January 2023

Another few months, another price increase. This time to letter rates. Will take effect 3rd January 2023.

Standard letter going up from $1.10 to $1.20, an increase of 9.1%.

All business letter rates going up on average around 5%.

Not sure what this means to the rolls of $1.10 stamps that some of us have, if there is a grace period where we can still use the old postage stamps. Perhaps needing to add 2 x 10c postage stamps to those of us still with $1 stamp rolls.

I remember when postage for a standard letter went up from 45c to 50c and it was a huge deal, news were all over it, everyone was outraged… the change from 50c to now $1.20 just seems like a blur.

That was in 2003. Federal minimum wage in Australia was $11.80 then, it's $21.38 now.

      • Oh yeah, I'm not really complaining, I send about 0.2 letters per year I'd say. Not exactly an expense that concerns me.

Just found it interesting how much it's gone up since then.

That was in 2003. Nowadays many standard letter mailings from businesses have shifted to electronic delivery aka email ; except for those stupid ASX statements / summaries which require brokers to participate (AFAIK almost no one except Stake), in order for investor to opt-in for electronic delivery via ASX portal access.

  • At least the service is stellar.

    • As long as the money is going to the workers then that's fine with me. I can't even remember when I last posted a letter, but I receive them all the time. Bills and statements anyway.

      • Yes, but Auspost employ a lot of contractors, that are paid per parcel. We can't begrudge them that. They have a van to supply, maintain and operate.

AusPost are averaging the costs of delivery across the board. so a letter to someone 350kms from Alice springs receives a letter that only costs $1.10 to send to them, but actually costs @ $50 (or more)

Definitely some worse couriers out there than auspost though ;)

I've had to deal with quite a few. If there are any worse couriers than auspost I've not yet had the misfortune to experience them.

Though in reality I think the issue mostly comes down to the quality of subcontractor or employee that's works for the company in your area.

@SBOB: I used to do a lot with Fastway, but too many issues (with deliveries) cost him a lot of business.

I am now at Auspost delivery #4700plus.
Funny thing is the area that was the final straw, only arrange pickups from us using Aramex.

This is mostly in regards to the letter service. Easy to have stellar service if you're the only service haha. Of course, courier service Auspost is like all other couriers, but to a lesser degree, very dependent on your local postie.

  • To answer your question about the stamps, the cost of postage has increased, this is different to the cost of a stamp. A $1 stamp will always be worth $1, as is a $1.10 stamp will always be worth $1.10. It's up to you to use combinations to meet the current cost of postage.
So, if you need to cover $1.20 POSTAGE then you can use any combination of stamps including $1 and $1.10, you just need to add the difference.
Bear in mind, this is different to overseas stamps where there is no GST, although same principle applies.

  • I just buy my stamps on ebay.

    Usually around 82c for a $1.10 stamp.

I've saved a fortune doing this.

  • How do I pay the extra 10c for a single letter postage if all I have is $1.10 stamps? Do I just have to put two $1.10 stamps on now?

Australia post will still deliver the Mail if you’re 10c short, but they do sell 10c stamps in $5 books.
