Just change your work flow abit, 3 second heat up only useful when you want hot water for tea I reckon.

Impress has a better work flow with the tamp system.
It will probably be up to temp by the time you grind, get your milk out, grab a cup.

    • 3 sec heat up not useful for hot coffee?

I got the Pro. Once you turn it on, first shot is usually under optimal temperature. I usually pull one empty shot first to bring everything up to temperature then start my process.

Personally, if you are not very into the manual process and prefer more automation, the Impress will suit you. If you like to fine tune and control every step of the way, then get the Pro.

        • Thanks, make sense to me

  • I upgraded to the Pro from the regular Barista, and have had lots of issues with it so wouldn't recommend. The main issue being it will randomly refuse to pull a shot because of an issue with the flow meter (others have had the same issue). I'll probably buy another regular Barista to replace it if there's a good Black Friday deal.

The Impress seems like a bit of a novelty to me, personally I don't think there's much difference pulling a lever twice vs tamping yourself (certainly not a $300 difference, but you're getting a deal so). The coffee you get from that vs the regular Barista Express is likely to be extremely similar.

    • So 3 secs heat up is really not a buying point as having those pull shot issue.

      • Well yeah, if I'd known I'd be having this issue, it would have been a deal-breaker for me. Going to make a coffee and then finding out you can't have one and instead you need to descale your machine for 40 minutes and then maybe it might work sucks.

But you might not have the issue, in which case it's a good machine.

Another part of my point is that I think the puck-pressing thing is a novelty that doesn't improve things for you that much, so if you could get a regular Barista Express for even less money, maybe consider that. But that's just, like, my opinion man.
