Apple Watches (New to Apple) Which one do you suggest?

I was a long term Samsung user. I jumped ship and managed to buy an iphone14pro

I am in need of a new watch as I have been wearing the same g-shock for 6 years but its fairly used and banged up.
I thought I could compliment the phone by buying an apple watch as I still have some of those 15% off gift cards.

Can I hear some opinions on what they wear and what I should go for? I am just slightly overwhelmed by different prices and specs.

  1. Apple Series 8 (Aluminium) no cellular ($577 after gc)
Is it worth getting cellular for the extra $$$ (I am with Amaysim)
Is it worth spending the extra $$$ on stainless steel if I can just buy a panzerglass case for the aluminium case?

  2. Apple Ultra for $1299 (about $1104 with gc). Comes with Titanium and cellular….
Is it overkill considering its double the price?

Safe to buy from JB? (I have read other forum posts 😂)

I am sorry if this thread is a mess. I am usually fairly clean asking questions.

Let me know what you think or what you would go for as a first time Apple watch user. Thanks.

Ultra great watch. $1104 is a steal.

    • Yes , they're robbing you blind !

Firstly, calculate how much time you spend away from your phone per week. If it is less than 10%, then I would argue you are wasting good money having to buy an additional eSIM plan.

    • Yeah I will do this! Thanks:)

    • I think useful if you do hiking or marathon(and don't take your phone).
Or your out in the surf for hours and hours.

Otherwise not a lot of point.

I have had a few different ones, I would suggest what you feel comfortable with and what your budget allows.
The more expensive ones are usually a little heavier which some people prefer and also stronger screens and body's.
The Ultra is the strongest of the bunch and little better battery time.

  • You can't use the cellular feature on Apple Watch unless you're with Telstra, Optus or Vodafone, so you should buy the GPS-only model if you're going aluminium.

I think if you're going to consider the stainless steel model you might as well go for the Ultra provided it's not too big and bulky for your wrist. It's not too much more than stainless steel and has better durability, battery etc.

    • So i assume Amaysim it wont work even though its partners with Optus?
Durability wise would a panzerglass case be beneficial to the aluminium case?

      • No, you need to be with those three carriers, they don't allow MVNOs like Amaysim to offer Apple Watch cellular plans.

I don't know much about the Panzerglass product as I don't use cases or screen protectors for the watch. Having owned both aluminium and stainless steel models I can say the glass on the aluminium scratches way easier than the sapphire glass on the stainless steel, so an unobtrusive screen protector could be a good idea.

Personally I wouldn't get a case for a watch. It looks really dorky and to be honest unless your a total clutz or can't live with normal wear and tear over the years, you're gonna be fine.

        • Well that helps with that decision.
The issue I have is if i go stainless steel than i might as well go ultra.

Im leaning to the 8 series (aluminium) in the 45mm without cellular. Put a screen protector on it.
My logic i guess is to get a watch in its latest version because its also half the price and in 2 or 3 years will want more features if I can afford.

That a dumb way to go about it?

@iNeed2Pee: I don't think you'll go wrong either way, but the aluminium is definitely the better option if you're looking to upgrade in 2-3 years. No point spending the extra for the Ultra if you're gonna replace it that quickly.

The Apple Watches after Series 4 can easily last 5+ years unless the battery is completely shot. In fact, there's hasn't been much improvement in the CPU department lately. Early on a newer model brought pretty big leaps in performance, but the Series 4 & 5 have the same CPU, while Series 6, 7 & 8 also all have the same CPU that's about 20% better than the previous one.

            • @lint: Thanks for the in depth replies. Appreciate it

I am going to go back into Apple and really try em on again and just get a feel for it tbh.
I have been used to gshocks for a long time so when I did try the 8 on I was underwhelmed. The ultra did feel good obviously, but after already spending $1800 on a phone, hard to swallow another $1100 😂

If you are not 100% on buying new, refurbished watches are another option: https://www.apple.com/au/shop/refurbished/watch/apple-watch-… though your gift cards may dictate which way you go. The Series 7 does not have crash detection, body temperature monitoring or Bluetooth 5.3 found in the Series 8.

tbh I've heard 7 is just as good as 8 (just like apple watch SE Ed1 is just as apparently as good as Ed2).
Even 6 is just as good as 7 apparently, just faster charging (7 is 33% faster) and slightly bigger screen.

I've heard that body temp is apparently most useful if your pregnant. Crash detection I guess could be useful out in regional areas (but not really city).
And is BT 5.0 that different from 5.3 ?

I would like some pushback from this.

  • I thought I could compliment the phone by buying an apple watch

Thank you for being such a great phone — for always being there for me I got you… surprise!… an Apple Watch!!

  • Of the latest models, the SE 2022, it doe's the most for the least amount of money.

    • Im probably going to go ultra after weighing up all of the options and because it feels similar to the g shock.
Titanium is also a wonderful thing for me as I am prone to randomly smacking my wrist haha

      • If you're prone to smashing your wrist, forget an apple watch and get a Garmin Fenix. I've got one and its soooooo worth it, smart/fitness watch thats tanky and sleek. Give it a look.

        • Yeah i have had a look at those before, I think because I now have an iphone the apple watch would integrate well, especially when I go overseas next year.

  • How are you getting Series 8 for $577 after gift cards? Can you explain?

15% off with the coles gc….

Current price $679 - the discount works out to $577……
