How to Use Small iPhone Memory Size

I’ve purchased an iPhone after years of having Samsung. I was told I only needed a small memory 128gb as everything is stored on the cloud. I now have none of the photos from my old phone, messages only transferred over what I had written (no replies) and now a phone with full memory that I can’t take any more photos with.
I’m contemplating buying an iPhone with bigger memory but my husband tells me his phone is 64gb and “everything is on the icloud). I’m really confused how to have a low memory iPhone if I can’t delete any photos/ videos from my iPhone as this deletes off iCloud as well.

Anyone been in same situation and can offer some advice?

Issue 1:
Getting photos from old phone into iCloud:
When transferring from my Samsung to set up my iPhone there wasn’t enough memory on the new iPhone to transfer photos so none of my photos are on the new phone.
I’ve since tried to copy my photos from Samsung to PC and then into iCloud but it won’t transfer any videos (as it doesn’t accept mp4 files) or photos less than a certain mb and it cuts out before transferring (as there are 14k photos).
How do I get my photos/ videos from old phone onto iCloud? (Not enough storage to transfer onto the phone)

Issue 2:
I’ve set up new phone and taken some photos (a lot), got some apps on it etc and it’s out of memory!
I was told by apple that if you delete photos from your iPhone they automatically delete from iCloud. So how do you use the phone with smaller memory and have everything on iCloud?

You need support. Go onto the apple web site and ask.

    • Thankyou! I was on the phone to an apple support person for over an hour who didn’t have a clue! No help at all and with a new baby over an hour on the phone to me is a lot of time!

      • Never said call apple for help.

Good to see you know the difference between a web site and a phone….

Your storage is at capacity, not your memory. Just FYI, mate

Yes that’s the one… storage (and my own memory by the looks 😆)

  • Have a read of this article: https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/how-to-delete-ph…

If you have only one icloud account, risk of losing photos if you turn photo sharing back on: "There is a drawback to this method: If you reconnect your photos to iCloud, it will update to match your phone, deletions and all. If you want a more permanent cloud backup for your photos, use a different cloud server."

"Use a server other than iCloud for photo backup" might be the best alternative for you.

I backup my photos to PC and SSD (personal preference only).

    • Thanks and I have heard this. So I’m left confused how anyone gets by with a lower memory iPhone! It doesn’t seem possible to me and taking this into account as well

  • For issue one, perhaps transfer old photos to Google Photos server and view using the app? (Never tried this method)

    • Will do. It means they don’t all show in the apple camera roll and are in google photos and I’m paying for google storage and iCloud storage but I don’t really see an alternative

      • I don't know cloud pricing but it would be painful if the cost of cloud storage (over the long term) was more than upgrading to a larger storage phone! Otherwise sell the phone and get one with more storage space.

        • Interesting point and will calculate that too

  • Buy a bigger one, that's how Apple likes users to roll for $$ ;)

    • Wonder what happens in another 5 years of photos, I’ll need a huge storage!
I wish I did this in the first place! Even the job hifi store assistant assured me a low storage phone can be done with everything just simply on the cloud. Such a headache and now see a higher storage would be alot easier.

  • The phone keeps a smaller version of the photos.

Settings > General > iPhone Storage will show what's using the storage.

I don't have iCloud Photos enabled, it says I will save 8.98 GB of the 11.43 GB I am using for photos if I enable it.

Other apps such as Spotify will cache data too, you can see and delete app data here.

Setup iCloud Drive on your computer to move and view mp4's https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT204025

If it is the small photo files filling up the iPhone, maybe you can move photos to the Drive part of iCloud, I'm not sure on this though.

    • Thankyou for sharing and will look into this as well. Definitely don’t have Spotify as no phone storage for apps! 😆

  • Try doing a full reboot. Often the iphone will keep a backup after a major ios update.
    Forced reboot will clear it.

    • I’ll give this a try as hadn’t heard this before thankyou

  • With limited storage space on the phone only keep media on your phone that you need frequent access to.

For cloud storage try Google drive, Dropbox, Microsoft onedrive…etc (free with limited storage unless you pay) lots of options to try to see which works best for you.
For local storage you can use some external hard drives. Also look into OTG flash drives (may need an adapter)
Whatever you do make sure you have backups eg cloud storage+local storage or multiple local storage backups

    • Thankyou and great advice. So interesting as I had thought I could just transfer everything from my phone to iCloud but will look into Dropbox now as well

      • do you use word and excel, then you may already have 1TB onedrive cloud storage, personally speaking, onedrive is better than dropbox.
