can someone please explain what makes this worth the extra money?
I may be a tech orientated person, but I'm microwave slow.

    • Panasonic

      • After looking at the 2, I noticed this one doesnt have the rotating thing.
        I'm actually interested now.

Edit: ok so apparently its just a normal microwave with the rotating part removed.

        • No, standard microwaves with the rotating tray are not inverter microwaves. I believe standard microwaves blast the food at full power for a few seconds and then turn off the microwaves for a few seconds and repeat. This is how they stop from overheating the food.
Inverters control how much power they send and then send it constantly instead of off then on and off constantly. Supposedly better

          • +3

@MambaZone: My Panasonic is an inverter and also has a rotating tray….

          • @MambaZone: ah okay,
I was going off this video which was on the good guys listing of the microwave https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYJPrakkcLU&t=1s

            • @ihuntbargains: I think what she says is a bit misleading. Inverter and microwaves that don't have inverter written in them aren't the same.

              https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/buying-guide/microwave-buying….

Either way, end result is Inverters are supposedly better

              • @MambaZone: Wonder how much the lack of rotating is going to impact defrosting/heating up frozen goods.
I'm tempted to buy this microwave due to the flat bed, but I don't wanna end up with a microwave that I have to turn the food for.

          • @MambaZone: Lol my 10year old Panasonic is a inverter, very old tech. One that not rotating is the new kid in the block. They been around too but they start to become popular.

            • +2

@boomramada: Ok yeah, so you can still have Inverter with rotating tray. Not sure what the difference between rotating inverter and flat bed is then

              • @MambaZone: If you google (someone has to do the dirty work), flat bed, easy to clean, cooks better and slightly expensive.

                https://mybudgetrecipes.com/flatbed-microwaves-vs-turntable-…

              • @MambaZone: More space so better efficiency for size. Usable (real) space in microwaves with turntables is less than advertised because the turntables take up a decent amount of space.
If you are a frequent mover as well, then a flat bed is less risk.

              • @MambaZone: Yes you can have an inverter oven without the rotating dish. Inverter refers to how the power is generated to heat the food.

It's a flatbed, but I can confirm the Panasonic flatbeds are terrible. Some parts of the food, usually towards the bottom will be scalding hot, whereas other parts will still be stone cold. Reheating requires using lower power, and mixing the food around several times. A $50 Kmart microwave is much better than this rubbish.

        Thankyou.
This is the information I was looking for.
I loved the idea of not needing the rotating bit, but feared (rightfully so) that it would make heating/cooking food very terrible.

        Thanks for saving me money.

I own this microwave and I must say it’s really good. I can’t say if it’s worth $259 because I bought it for close to nothing years ago. The key is to reheat low and slow and it comes out wonderfully. Flatbed is amazing - much more space and easy cleaning. Will never go back to a rotating plate.

If you’re going to spend this amount on a microwave anyway, I do recommend this

        • +1

Whereas my mate at work has the same one and says it's fantastic. No rotating plate = less crap to clean on any spillage.
He says it heats perfectly and is never uneven.. So there you go.. 2 totally polar opposite opinions on it.
          I still grabbed one..

      • Which Panasonic flatbed microwave do you have? I have this one and have zero complaints. It’s really good

        • The number is NN-SF564W.

I've also found that it tends to disconnect devices from the wifi network when it's heating things up on full power. But that's less of an issue than it's uneven heating.

          • @iseeyou1312: I have the same one. Haven’t had any issues with wifi.

Do you lower the wattage and increase the time when heating food?

            • @Thranrond: Yep, usually reheat things on 3-4 bars (out of 6). But even then it's bad. The one thing it does an okay job of is cooking porridge.

      • +2

Not my experience at all. We bought 1 last year and it’s hands down the best microwave we’ve ever owned.

We got the exxie one with the drop down door and combination microwave and convection. Steam etc.

But on normal microwave it’s amazing and no terrible rotating thing to stuff up.

        • Which model did you get, at what price and were you considering it amongst some others?
Am looking to purchase a combo microwave/convection/air fryer all in one and am considering the Breville combi wave. Keen for your thoughts about your model

        • +1

Plus 1. Absolutely loved mine. Very skeptical at first but worth every bit. Long as it fit in the door, in you go. Square, round, Apple banana you name it. Of course will take longer if you load it up but I find food come out very evenly. No spinning disc is a huge plus.

      • +1

Can confirm this is what happens with these gimmicky devices. I think elderly people like them for that retro style when microwaves first came out. To deal with the uneven heating, I'd arrange my food into a ringed donught shape.

        • Its interesting that all commercial microwaves do not have a turntable.

  • purchased. thanks

  • Our Panasonic 1100w inverter microwave looks almost identical (but isn't) and must be about 12 years old. I can't kill it. But it's missing the non stick internal surfaces which would be great to have.

    • +2

If you want to kill it, put some foil and a bag a grapes in it on high and grab yourself some popcorn.

      • +1

Make the popcorn in the microwave before the show begins?

        • Ahh yes, that is highly advised.

  • This is 27 litres vs 42 litres LG deal

    • I would look at both in store. Having a rotating plate makes a lot of the 42L unusable. I have the Panasonic and you can fit really big dishes in there because of the squared base

    • According to a few comments, It seems that the LG Neochefs are guaranteed to die within 2 - 3 years.

  • +1

    got one. Thanks OP.

I bought one of these a few weeks ago to replace my 12 year old Panasonic… It's rubbish. I get Lite n Easy so heat up loads in the Microwave, never had an issue with the old one but this one is very inconsistent. Sometimes it heats fine, other times there's still frozen parts (after 8 minutes in there). I've even had issues cooking popcorn bags. I can't say if it's mine or if it's just the way the flat beds are, but I'd go back to my old one in a heartbeat if I could.

  • These Panasonic microwaves have a flawed design on the door lock. There are a lot of posts on internet about the issue. Mine stopped working with only 2yrs of use. I don't recommend.

    • +1

Because you have been slamming the door shut every opportunity you get.

  • 1.5 years, good device!

OK, my two cents worth: we have a Panasonic microwave which is 6 years old and still working: inverter model means it pulses the magnetron (the microwave producing element to deliver the selected power output: this is more efficient as it is not open slather on the mains)
So old faithful is fine however it is rusted internally and needs to be retired: reading suggests this is a problem with all non stainless steel microwaves and to prevent this one needs to dry the internal surfaces of the microwave after use. Alternatively buy a stainless steel "lined" microwave: be careful with the nomenclature as stainless steel does not mean stainless steel internally : If you get an internally lined stainless steel mocrowave, there is likely to be less oxidation, however do dry internally anyway after use or leave the door open for five minutes or so.
The last point is when you are microwaving at six am, the beeper can't be shut up unless one pounces on the microwave and cancels it: it would be nice to be able to turn this off and this is a feature I think one should look for in addition to the stainless steel

    • Is this one easy to clean for anything that got stuck on the walls? My current sharp is hard to clean the walls

    • inverter model means it pulses the magnetron

Small detail, inverter does exactly the opposite :) It continiously step-down-converts source power to avoid using PWM as power control method. But result is as you described :)

  • Purchased this for $310 and no regrets. It's a good model. Flat bed isn't as good supposedly for even cooking, but I haven't really noticed it. So much easier to clean however. I did come from a non inverter cheap kmart model though.

  • Can you get a trim kit for this?

    • I price matched at the good guys, on their website there is a trim kit advertised for it.

      • Hey fizz, appreciate it. Had a search but couldn’t find it, are you able to share a link? Why did u price match btw?

        • I’m always at work so I wanted a mate to pick it up for me since I recently moved and don’t get a day off till Saturday. I’m not sure of a link to the kit is but if you look at the bottom of the page here is shows it.
https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/panasonic-27l-flatbed-inverte… it says “ Matching Stainless Steel Trim Kit Available
The ultimate kitchen accessory takes your stand-alone microwave to an in-built cooking appliance, giving you the luxe designer kitchen you’ve always dreamed of.” and shows a pic of it.

  • Anyone else get CR cash back declined for this?
