Best Wi-Fi Setup

Hi.

I would appreciate some perspective on how to get best network setup in my household.

Currently
Nbn FTTP - nbn NTD in garage - r7000 router - 5 Ethernet ports in garage
port 1 to bedroom Ethernet to ps5
port 2 to study Ethernet port to pc
port 3 to living room deco mesh m7 M5
port 4,5 back rooms

Family uses a lot of wifi and am constantly getting dropouts in the back rooms. Is it simply installing another deco mesh in the back rooms?

Or could I just get a more powerful router in garage?

Thanks

Depends on the size of the house and how many walls are in between the devices.
How have you set up your wifi network across the two different devices? Are you using the same ssid?
That could be causing some issues if they're too close together with interference.

I personally find it easier and cheaper these days to just add an extra deco particularly if you have the Ethernet ports to provide the backhaul.
Doesn't have to be the same model as your current one.

Another option (I would want someone else to confirm this though) is to move your n7000 to another section of the house. Put a switch in your garage to route the internet back through the other ports in your garage

    • If the ports in the back rooms aren't being used, then yeah:

      • put another Deco in one of the back rooms
      • disable wifi on the n7000
      • (if the garage wifi is a necessity) unplug the other back room from the router and put another Deco in the garage using that now spare port
      • (if the other back room is a necessity) do all of the above, get a network switch (6+ports), move all the Deco cables to the switch and connect it to the n7000 with 1 cable

This should get your entire place covered with WiFi and prevent any issues between the devices (n7000 vs Deco)

    What's a Deco m7? Typo?

    • M5 sorry

  • Is it correct that you only have one deco Mesh device?

In the back rooms do the WIFI devices connect to the modem of the single mesh device by default?
How far is it between the back room and the WIFI modem/mesh? How many walls are between the two and what are they made of?

    • Hi yes just one deco

Yep back wifi switches between mesh wifi and garage wifi. Garage is at front of house, mesh on west side, back east is bad wifi
Walls, probably at least 4 or so

One Deco does not a mesh make…..

Definitely need more. I recently upgraded from a dual band m5 to a tri band m9 mesh. I didn't know what back haul was . I now do and the difference is significant .
